1. John Wiedeman and Troy Murray Easily the best in Chicago. Wiedeman is perfect for hockey. He is able to paint a great picture on the radio for hockey which is very difficult to do. You can feel in his voice when something is brewing. And Troy Murray is an even better analyst than Eddie O. TS - I like Foley and Eddie O but sometimes they get too goofy with each other. |

I forgot about them. Gotta update the list. |

Foley/ED O probably the best of the bunch... Hawk is the worst...Hughes/Stone would be the best. |

Farmer is the straight man who tries to talk about every small town in Southern California. |

Usually when I hear the game on radio, Farmer is asking DJ some inane question to try and be funny and DJ just deadpans "no". It's hilariously uncomfortable. |

Joniak? Keep it. King of the too-screamy homers. Bears radio has never recovered from the Larivee departure. Foley and Eddie O are the best. |

Just as they switch off doing the play-by-play, they switch off shutting down the other guy's attempt at a bit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDo4JeRsVE4 Ed Farmer and Darrin Jackson. |

1. Pat Hughes 2. Everybody else |

Pat Hughes and John Wiedeman are the best two play-by-play guys. Pat Foley is right up there, but he's not really a "pure" pxp guy anymore, which is fine and fun, because I enjoy the banter with Olczyk as long as it's timely (which is to say, when the game is out of hand or painfully dull). I know the Second City Hockey guys rag on Foley for being drunk all the time and getting everyone's names wrong, but hey, it's whatever. Most hockey broadcasters are completely awful. If the worst thing Pat Foley does is call Marcus Kruger "Dave Bolland," or tell us for the millionth time about that one time at the old Montreal Forum where the heavily-Quebecois-accented public address announcer said the goal came at "tree turdy tree in da turd," he's still top five out of the sixty or so guys doing this. Jeff Joniak is a putz. I have no thoughts on Chuck Swirsky because basketball on the radio is like punk rock in a book, but he's probably a putz, too. |

They grew on me, sort of speak, the last 2 NBA seasons on the ESPN Radio/Bulls Radio Network, and that's Chuck Swirsky & Bill Wennington. The same can be said for their TV counterparts, Neil Funk & Stacey King. It won't sound quite the same this upcoming season as long as Derrick Martell Rose is sidelined with the torn ACL and the Bulls probably won't be nearly as good as they've been in Coach Tom Thibodeau's first 2 seasons. Unfortunately, Blackhawk fans likely won't hear John Wiedemann & Troy Murray on 720 WGN Radio, as well as Comcast SportsNet's Pat Foley & Eddie Olczyk this fall due to the growing likelihood of an NHL lockout. In my opinion, those guys are the best announcers this city have to offer. |

Do you agree, though, that basketball does not lend itself to radio very well? People say that about hockey, but between Radio-Quality Pat Foley and Wiedeman, we've had the picture painted exceptionally well for us here. Also, I think the blackout made us good at listening to hockey, the way a blind man's sense of hearing is said to compensate for what he can't see. |

Hockey is a quick game for radio, and a lot of the NHL players have the kinds of names that are really hard to pronounce. |

You can thank new NHLPA Executive Director Don Fehr and "Mr.Bean", I mean NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, for that. |
