I'm channel surfing and I hear the grating voice of Mancow. Then I look over to his left, and there is old Pappy. Is he on the show daily? Is he Mancow's sports guy? He and Mancow truly are cock roaches in this industry.

Man, I remember when Mancow was on the "cutting edge" of talk radio in Chicago, whatever that means.

When did he leave/get the boot from Q101?

I also remember that he was really big into the global conspiracy/black helicopter talk.

He's reinvented himself as a mini-Glenn Beck.

Mancow is a scumbag. I remember Dahl telling a story that when he first sobered up Mancow called him saying he thought he might have a drug/alcohol problem. Dahl went and talked with him, and shared a lot of personal shit. Mancow used the information to go on the air to blast him and share what I expect was thought to be a private discussion.

That was a pretty idiotic thing for Dahl to do though. Mancow has ripped Dahl since he has been on the air in Chicago. Why would Dahl even trust him when walking into a conversation like that?

I remember when Mancow supposedly sent out Turd to Dahl's house in Mancow Mobile One to search Dahl's garbage cans for "extra" cocaine that Dahl had thrown away. Apparently Dahl was listening and he came outside to confront Turd. Dahl was listening to Turd go through the garbage cans at "Steve Dahl's house", yet Dahl was standing on his own driveway and Turd was nowhere in sight. Theater of the Mind. The funniest part of the whole thing is the concept of "extra" cocaine.

Lots of turd's in Western Springs, how would Dahl know he had the right one?

I agree it was foolish of Dahl to trust him. In fact, it's something Dahl himself would've done himself in the late 70's. He used to be brutal on Wally Phillips. I don't think he could call Wally a coke head though.

Remember the commercial with Brandmeier punching a pig in a Hawaiian shirt and saying, "You too, fatboy."

I don't remember that. Was that when Dahl & Meier were at WLS and Brandmeier just got to WLUP?

Every straight middle class white boy around my age was a fan of Dahl. When I see or hear him now though, he just seems like a guy who has become everything he used to hate. I guess he has a hardcore base of fans who will pay for his podcasts to continue along with him on his "journey", but that isn't me. He just makes me feel old.

I'm not saying that he should be the same guy he was at 23. But when you stake out certain ground you've set your path. Pete Townshend looks ridiculous playing "My Generation" at age 70. There's nothing graceful about it. "Hope I die before I get old"? Why the fuck didn't you? Compare that to a teenage Paul Westerberg: "I hate music. Sometimes I don't. I hate music. It's got too many notes. I hate my father. One day I won't. I hate my father. Just get off my back." There's a real self-awareness there that guys like Dahl and Townshend apparently lacked.

It was when Brandmeier first came to Chicago. I guess Steve & Garry had to be on WLS then, right?

Dahl willingly chose the path to irrelevancy. Choosing Dave Mc Bride and Joy Masada as co anchors was an admission that he wanted to prep his show for WGN. He apologized for Disco Demolition. He took up golf. Fuck did that guy get weak. I don't blame it only on his sobering. You can still be edgy and sober. He chose to be milquetoast.

I listened to his podcast when it was free. I'm not paying for it. It wasn't anywhere near the Dahl of 25 years ago, but he had his moments. JORR I can see what you mean when you say he makes you feel old. He was 30 years old when I started listening. Now he's the golfing grandpa. He was never as good with anyone as he was with Meier. They just had that chemistry.

Heh, "extra" coke was what you sold before you snorted all you had left.

I haven't listened to Dahl since Meier left, either. It's sounds like Dahl has become lazy, much like North.

All these guys chiming in about Dahl that haven't listened to him in 20 years!

I listen to his podcast. It's kind of like Wally Phillips actually. He's not lazy, though. He tries his best but not many people want to listen to a sober 55 year old.

Like many I was a religious listener to him until the score started actually. I imagine he sobered up and matured as has his main audience in similar ways. I like many would probably be criticizing the hell out of him now if he was a 55 year old trying to be cool/hip with the younger crowd?

I catch North on fox radio and he is actually one of their better hosts..their lineup is brutal..he still says some ridiculous statements like 3 days ago "Junior Seau would have sat on the bench if he was on the 85 Bears, he was not as good as Singletary,Marshall or Wilson

Never thought Mancow or Dahl were aything more than awful.

nah...early 30's ...I know several people who swear Dahl was once great, I just never heard it...gave him a chance and Matthews when they followed Stern..both were awful..Dahl had me reaching for my tuner to see if my radio was still on with all the dead air...I remember Mancow well..he fucking sucked..phony ass douche.

Yeah, that would be much worse. Dahl is nothing if not genuine. And I'm sure there are plenty of people who were teenagers in 1979 that grew up with Dahl, became more conservative as he did, bought bigger homes and more expensive cars and took up golf as he did the same, and raised their families at close to the same time he raised his. I'm just not one of those people. Dahl isn't a phony. I respect him for that. He just has to deal with the fact that the 55 year old guy generally isn't going to be as passionate about his interests as the 21 year old guy. Dahl is a must-listen for fewer people than he once was. He used to be Everyman. Now he's a rich guy who needs to sit on a cushioned seat and be fed gourmet food when he attends a "rock" concert. That's fine. But again, it just isn't me.

Is Dahl a rich guy? never went national as far as I know..how much did wckg pay back in the day? or A.M. radio in the 80'-90's.

His last deal paid $1-$2 million per annum. I can't recall the exact amount. He should have enough in the bank not to have to worry about it.

He's not Howard Stern, but I don't think he's hurting. I would suggest there's far more financial distance between him and his average listener than there was in 1980.

You make a compelling argument, Mayor Rod Craig. But my podcast/radio plate is too full...

I think Dahl was pushing the 2 million per year barrier for most of the 90s and made good coin even before that. His wife is an attorney, although I don't think she ever amounted to much.

I have been listening to Brandmeier a little bit recently. I kind of like his show.
