Haha. As if ESPN's All Night host Jason Smith needed to further convince anyone that he sucks, he invited his guest Raul Alegre to speak Spanish for about 20 seconds mid-segment last night. That was after completely hijacking the sports talk to interrogate Alegre (who is hard enough to undertand in English) about his fan mail.

Feels like ritual sacrifice of the overnight audience everytime this guy takes the air.

What I dislike about Smith is that he has booyahlicious one-track and speak-too-fast-itis as bad as anyone. I ended up hearing about the first hour of Monday night's show and the last two hours. There were at least four different occasions when he categorically declared Elis Manning wasn't a leader, didn't have it in him. Maybe it's true, but the guy has been playing under great pressure in New York since his first year, while Phillip Rivers got to hold the board for two years and plays in the media whirlwind of San Diego.

Maybe Manning will be a bust or a "non-leader," but did we need to hear it four times in three hours?

Finally, at the end of the show, he covered the pulling pf the OJ show and book? Was anyone in the Western hemisphere with access to a TV, radio, computer or a friend unaware of that story this AM?

**What I dislike about Smith is that he has booyahlicious one-track and speak-too-fast-itis as bad as anyone.**

Definitely.

I just think he's really pooped on the all night. That's a format that's good for long form. Take some time and talk about a topic. Say something interesting. Get good guests to have a real conversation.
But he's just turned it into a bunch of short segments that barely get past the headlines and the latest Bristol booya-think.

Ya, even that Manning example - sure it's too early to say that about Eli, but if he backed it up and made a case, then at least that would be something worth a listen. Instead he just states it like it's a headline 3-4 times, and leaves it at that.

Basically, he tries to slide by with slick production, short "recap" and "opinion" segments (like his "opinion" on E.Manning), trite personal anecdotes (gardening with his girlfriend stuff), the occasional call-in ("complete this sentence" - shows absolutely no trust in the listeners and no command of the format), and guests who obviously don't like talking with him (because he makes them do dumb shit like speak Spanish, instead of talk sports).

**Finally, at the end of the show, he covered the pulling pf the OJ show and book? Was anyone in the Western hemisphere with access to a TV, radio, computer or a friend unaware of that story this AM?**

Standard - his tries at bringing entertainment/pop culture stuff pretty much always come up flat and worn-out, just the most banal stuff ever.
He tries to do his own take on T.Wright's topics for guys who like sports, but the difference is - it showed that T.Wright and the listeners actually did have an interest in those topics. Maybe he's trying to do cynical, look how dumb pop-culture is, but he's got to do better than the millionth take on OJ (not even a take, really, just 'here it is, folks').

Add that squeaky voice and his talk too-fast (my girlfriend, who is not a native English Speaker, says that he sounds like a turkey, "just saying gobble gobble all the time") and it's just diappointment for a time when I would actually enjoy listening to sports radio.

Have you guys heard that overnight show on the Score ?

What's the theme ? Celebrate life with sports ??

He makes every caller say one good thing that's happened to them, and most of the conversations/topics on the show end up being some personal story a caller has - nothing to do with sports at all.

I have my radio on a lot at night, and it's like a councelling show for this guy - you can't call in and talk Ohio St/Michigan, off-season baseball, NFL, whatever...

I have no idea how this show is on the air, much less on a sports station brought to us by Sporting News.

I couldn't believe that Sporting News guy when I woke up one morning. I think it was "love yourself and others Monday". Bunch of weirdos calling in talking about how much they love their grandparents. Shit was worse then Relevant Radio.

That's what every night is - different topic, but some life topic where people call in where there personal stories.

A few weeks ago, he started the show by saying we're going to preview the NBA season. I stopped what I was doing, and was shocked he was going to talk sports.

His next sentence was that he doesn't like the NBA, he started laughing at his joke, and introduced a topic - did you ever want to get revenge on your boss ?

SNR's moving so we're going to lose some of the locals -

Dialing: Pulling up stakes
• • Sporting News Radio is leaving its longtime digs in north suburban Northbrook early next year and relocating all of its studios and offices to Los Angeles. The move follows several rounds of layoffs and budget cuts at the troubled sports/talk network.

So who will be doing the overnight stuff?
I'm confused.

It'll still be a national satellite show fed to us from LA. But we'll never hear local stuff from Northbrook again / unless those guys move to LA / not very likely considering the low radio pay vs. high cost of moving/living there.

I think the Stein, AKA 'Feel Good About Yourself' is in LA.

Jim Miller, the Mike North of Michigan! It is remotely possible (pun intended) that WSCR would let SNR use a studio & broadcast around the country 24/7. At night they would put the signal up on the satellite & then bounce it back to WSCR to air.

Seems like Jason Smith and Brian Paruch are one and the same.

I hate the national guys when they try to patronize the locals for a token 30 seconds of 'who ya crappin?' garbage. Right after the Bears- Arizona game, Jasom Smith declares that was the first time the Bears had to come from behind all year. (Bears-Vikings game 1? Naaaaah. Hush)

I heard about 1/2 hour of the Stein show on Monday night, and it was classic. Seriously, gentlemen, if you haven't heard this show, it's worth listening to just for the unintenional comedy. I've said this before, but I still can't believe that this show is on Sporting News Radio.

Anyways, Jan 1 was the first show of 2007, and he was sort of introucing his show, and some of the terms he uses:

"Celebrating life through Sports" is his slogan.

1) What's your "BANG" ?
- BANG means opinion, as in, what's your opinion.

2) "Pay it forward"
- You are required to offer up one good thing that is happening/happened in your life when you are first brought on the air. "Pay it forward" is in reference to bringing up a point that may help another listener/caller, in other words, "pay it forward", as Stein puts it.

- In the short time I listened, his main topic was the death of Durant Williams, the Broncos DB who was shot on New Years at a club. This isn't a joke, but he actually asking callers to call in and share their D.Williams stories, have you met him, does your son have a Williams jersey sort of thing.

He then went on to talk about how he wanted to talk about the story that nobody else wanted to talk about, and that's D.Williams the person, and that's how he was 'Celebrating life through sports".

Just a completely funny show to hear this guy, actually trying to sound sincere....give it a listen, you're feel better about your own life after some of these callers call in!
