The Radio Booth:

Pat Hughes-Phony Vin Scully voice. Nobody in real life sounds like that

Keith Moreland-Not much color in his commentary

TV:
Len Kasper- It might be the beatdown of watching that shit team, but he sounds very bored in that booth. I think he is overrated

Jim DeShaies-His humorous quips lay flat on a younger generation. His baseball acumen is fine, nothing very deep. Out of the 4 though,I like him best.

Post Game on Comcast:
It's OK but I think it's crazy having this show when the team is 25 games out by may 14th. Waste of time.

If you do not like Pat Hughes then I am not sure what to tell you. But I agree the rest of the bunch is mediocre to bad much like the product on the field.

Hughes is fine. Isn't moreland gone now? Who cares.
Kasper is fine. Deshais is not dave otto bad but not great. He's no bob that's for sure. I miss him.

Pat Hughes is solid. I feel at ease listening to him....and this coming from someone who has Soxlike tendencies.

hughes is great. when you think of the partners he has had and to call as great as he does. that should make him HOF right there. i like kasper. jd is ok. as much as i would like to, i can't listen to a sox game from either booth. makes your ears bleed.

Pat Hughes sounds like a broadcaster. Broadcasting. If all you ask of your play-by-play man is that he sound like an asshole half-watching the game at a neighborhood dive bar, you can listen to Ed Farmer.

Jimmy, come on, Play by Play guys are just that. Describe the game, tell me whats going on and I think Pat and LENNY are as good as anyone.

DeShais is a huge suckfest for a guy who demanded a big deal! And Moreland was boring, K Wood will be boring too if he gets the gig. Hollandsworth might actually be a good radio color guy!

I don't appreciate Hughes "Scully"-like voice. Hey,let's throw Garry Meiers buddy,Elton Jim up there to do his Santo.

As for Holly, you can never turn your back on him per Dusty Baker.

Post subject:  Re: Cubs announcers-One big suckfest

Wood seems to want "the Ron Santo treatment" without any understanding of how Ron Santo got it in the first place. He was certainly a fine pitcher when he pitched. No argument there. But let's be honest: the guy has the personality of a dishrag at best and is a churlish jock at worst. He's not the unchecked id that Santo was. If anything, he's closer in spirit to Steve Stone.

What do you mean you don't appreciate it? This is one of the dumbest arguments I've ever had. Who in your mind is the ideal broadcaster of baseball on the radio? Give me a name. Because it sure sounds like you think the ideal is Farmer.

I was a big Vince Lloyd fan. To be fair,I hardly listen to the radio. I have more an issue with Pat's delivery than his words.

I don't want to put words in your mouth here james....or anything else for that matter but it seems like you feel like Pat Hughes comes across as insincere or phony/smarmy.....which I can kind of see where you are coming from, but I actually believe it is the opposite and Pat Hughes actually gets off on describing the green of the ivy and the blue of the home Cubs pinstripes.

Hughes sucks if you actually listen to him. As background noise, he's pretty good.

Hughes is OK but not great. He's kind of a fake in that he doesn't come across as genuine. Kasper is genuie but boring, JD is decent but not great and Moreland won't be missed. Otto is terrible and I am not a fan of Hollandsworth at all.

Overall grade, C-

Phil & the posters after him kind of agree with me. Maybe Phil is right about Pat. He does sound phony to me. Of course they will all sound 100 times better if the team plays some ball.

Let's face it Phil, how can any of us have an opinion on him? He might be great, who knows? I'm just glad it wasn't Hinch.

I actually listen to him and find that he describes the play well and both knows and enjoys the game of baseball. Does he sound a bit affected? Yes. You tend to sound affected when your job is to speak clearly and eloquently, which doesn't come naturally to most people. Again, if you don't want your professional broadcaster to speak clearly and eloquently and instead sound like Just Some Guy, then Ed Farmer is right there for you with his Sout Side honk and self-aggrandizing tangents no one gives a shit about.

You aren't wrong but I am just waiting for the Cubs to make a move that gets my Cubbie juices flowing.....This.....this is not that move. I really hope he isn't a mope like Sveum. I would also like to get someone who wasn't involved with the Padres or Red Sox at some point. Maybe think outside the box....

If you can't smell peanut butter, you have Alzheimer's.

If you can't enjoy Pat Hughes, you have severe baseball retardation.

Don,
It's called an opinion. I have been listening to baseball (like many here) for a long time. I'm sorry I don't jell with your opinion, but I wouldn't call you retarded because of it. Damn You, I'm going to management!

where's that innuendo thread?

And for all you youngsters out there, 'innuendo' isn't the Italian word for anal sex.

All 3 have that "sing-songy" voice that sounds like an act. I think Pat Hughes is a good guy and maybe his description of a game is really done well but his voice inflection annoys me.
