Steve King and Johnnie Putman, the husband-and-wife team who hosted overnights on WGN AM 720 for more than 26 years, will be heard again on the Tribune Broadcasting news/talk station.

In the couple’s first return engagement since they retired from WGN in December 2011, they’ll fill in Christmas week for morning personality Steve Cochran.

“I was thrilled they said yes,” said Todd Manley, vice president of creative content at WGN, who extended the invitation Monday. He said the move was part of the station’s ongoing effort to “honor the past,” which also has included overtures to other talent who left the station under previous management.

King and Putman will broadcast from WGN’s Allstate Showcase Studio on Michigan Avenue from 5 to 9 a.m. on Dec. 23, 24, 26 and 27. (Special programming will air Christmas Day.)

While there’s been no talk of anything beyond Christmas week, it wouldn’t be surprising if the fill-in stint led to more. In addition to Cochran’s return, WGN also welcomed back Kathy O’Malley and Judy Markey, who host a Saturday morning show, and Rick Kogan, who hosts a Sunday night show. In addition, Roy Leonard appears with late-night host Nick Digilio.

I know a lot of people didn't like Steve and Johnnie, but Bill Leff and McMurray are even duller, and we've been over the issues with Nick. If they were to be replaced, they should have been replaced with someone more interesting, not less.

Semi-funny story, though: my mom was complaining to me about Cochran taking the morning drive over from Brandmeier and how she's had to change her clock radio to 104.3 now. "WGN went back to Old People Radio," she said.

Their theme song is awesome.

It's Steve and Johnnie, it's Johnnie and Steve

Repeat for 6 minutes.

Man, look at them. And they used to be the hip, young people at that station.

Steve is the dude. Husband and wife were the Grobber of WGN late night for a while doing like 7 hours a night or something.

They did overnights for like 20 years. Steve King had also been in Chicago radio before that for quite some time. I think my dad worked with him at WIND. Or maybe WAIT. One of the two.

If I remember correctly, Steve King is a guitar knowledge guru. If you're into guitars - he's your guy.

Yeah, she was. Probably back when she did traffic for Bob Collins back in the 80. I think by now she's caught up to him. :P
