Bernstein ends up here. Listening to some guy named Groch? this weekend was the same as Bermfield and Finfer, all over modulated, over annunciating, over vocabulating and when you got right down to the heart of the issue, the topics sucked and was always played out.

They have plenty of time to grow and it is part of the reason they have all these cheap young guys playing radio, to see who pans out, but I am guessing Bernstein is offered some big money to come over and he cant refuse it.

I dont think it impacts Mac in anyway, as they still go after him in July, but if they do get Mac, it gives Danny B some great leverage and I could see doing a morning show on WGN.

Let me also add, I see Bernsteins show sucking, no matter where he ends up if Terry is gone. While we all rip on Terry for his sources and not watching, or sometimes even paying attention to his own show, he is the comedy and smart ass that makes them a popular listen. When he is gone, the ratings go.

I see him moving up to C-B-S-SPORTS-RA-DI-O!! before he goes to WGN. He's been a loyal CBS foot soldier; they might actually reward one of them for once.

I'd disagree that it would suck no matter what. Of course, now that Dan has doubled down on corporate liberalism and stopped worrying about being funny, his show would have a sky-high chance of sucking, but we used to love Dan's solo shows around here because he would drop a lot of the shtick and just be himself. Of course, "himself" has changed over the years.

LOL

Yeah right.

Bernstein is far from a unique voice or broadcaster. His intelligence is questionable on many topics, while his vocabulary is excellent.

WGN gets him into the "general talk" realm, which is what I think he wants to do. He would like to straighten everyone out on all topics, not just sports.

Maybe he can talk about his culinary skills, which I think suck from the places he considers to be good food. Oh, but his sister was on Iron Chef, so he must know things. lol

$$$$$

To keep a sports talk show in chicago and more money. Its a simple formula.

The guy is the biggest closet cubs fan since Rick Hahn, so he can be on the WGN tree (Assuming the Keep the cubs and I think this is one of the major reasons for this station)

Agreed.

Maybe that explains his North hatred......a chicago meatball personified got to do the show that Bernsie wanted.

Very true. Not sure who the real DB is anymore, but he was a completely different guy when he subbed for Dan Patrick a few years ago.

For the right money, he will do whatever show those who are signing the checks ask him to do.

Post subject:  Re: I PREDICT...

Didn't the "cute and funny" Bernstein time coincide with the subbing for the Dan Patrick show time? Because whenever that was that is when the mainstream (non-sports) Bernstein ship left the dock and the ship set sail. Sports have given him the perfect backdrop to delve into his brand of Serious.Radio.Entertainment because sports are both cyclical and change daily. He doesn't have to get tied down to any one topic and come the weekend there's something new to displace the discussion that was the previous week.

Getting away from sports would mean that he is no longer the smartest person in the room, and that he would not only have to talk to others who may know more but others who may denigrate him. Also, consider that right now where he is he gets to filter out those who might denounce him. I can't see him going to a different forum (or station) and being able to espouse his POV without people noting that he's an opinion coward.

As for his post-Boers future, the smart choice would be to get someone who would not only stand their ground in discussions but give the listeners someone to gravitate towards. A "good host, bad host" approach that could be entertaining and stimulating. The worst that could happen is comparable to WYC whereby Dan gets to evolve into a narrowly packaged and yet vacuous product, replete with a cadre of ALS members to give the the talking points.

That is a good point. Dan will be what he needs to be and can be a shifter. As for CBS Bernsie has no loyalty. It will be whatever best contract deal he gets. Monetize.

gotta disagree with the Boers part here. I could never imagine him contributing to the show's popularity. His existence on the show is limited to approving Dan's monologues and reinforcing Dan's abuse of callers. You said when he's gone, the ratings will go, but he's actually been gone for a long, long time.

Vegan - Terry gets paid the most of anyone there. he has been there the longest.

Do you think if he has zero impact on the Score as you claim, why do you think they pay him the most?

bernsteins act changes 100% when terry isnt there. he doesnt have anyone to confirm his thoughts, or its like he losses his bodyguard and he plays the part of the pussy.

I am not going to claim Terry works on the show at all. 50% of the time, he turns on the mic at home and just starts talking. Thats about as little of an effort as one can have, but it still makes an impact. Like it or not

Sure, historically I'm sure Terry has done some good work - what exactly he does just isn't clear when listening to today's Terry. His salary is probably linked to his seniority, and since the show is doing well I'm sure decision-makers have justifiably taken a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" approach, which is fine. As a listener over the past 3-4 years, my personal observation is that Terry brings zero to the show. In fact I enjoy when he's out because it means Rozner or whomever is in and the show becomes much more than Dan sermonizing while some dude in the background voices approval every now and then.

This doesn't happen when Leery sits in (which he hasn't done lately, I don't think). He gets worse.

There are four kinds of people in sports talk radio:
-Radio Guys
-Former athletes
-Columnists
-Former Hot Dog Stand Owners

At present, The Game seems to be leaning Radio Guy/Ex Jock, but, as has been pointed out, many of these guys could be placeholders. Dan Bernstein is a radio guy who leans/aspires columnist if I'm not mistaken. I don't think he fits. Too gravitas-y. I think they will eventually counterprogram a meatball against him, wherever he ends up, kind of like how WCIU Channel 26/Comcast 381/U-Verse 5543 always programs "The Three Stooges" against 'Masterpiece Classics" on PBS.

Ideally you'd probably want a host that combines the best of those four categories, but for obvious reasons that's not a realistic proposition.

The closest thing to that would be fill-in host, ex-Redskin, Tribune columnist, and putative grilled-meat enthusiast Matt Bowen. Be careful what you wish for.

I actually like Bowen but I don't think he has enough 'Mac' in him, if that makes sense. I don't see him carrying a segment or two as a host when all topics have been beaten to death and there's still time to kill before changing directions. As an analyst I think he's great, and I will tune in when he's breaking down important Bears' stuff.

This would be true, vegan, if you wanted the whole audience. But what the 3rd sports station in the market should probably try to do is slice off a nice slab of the existing audience that is underserved. Harry and Spike should have a big sign in the studio that says 'SABRMETRICS" with a red circle and a line through it in front of it.

Terry is the glue that holds the show together. The smartass remarks go a long long way. When they are done with that, the show is gone and one.

Everyone there knows it

Why else pay a guy more than anyone at the station, for a guy who hardly participates in anything at the station and unless it is a sunny day to drive in, he doesnt?

Seniority?

Are you saying it's problematic to think a long-tenured employee is compensated well not only for his performance (in their eyes), but also for how long he's been with the company?

You might not like Terry as a host, you might think his info is suspect at best, but he is the guy who makes people laugh as the crumudgeon of sports talk.

He doesnt get paid because he was around for a long time, if that was the case Harry would have been paid millions by WMVP

Good point. I respect the demand for meatball-ish shows and all that, but I could never tune in to that, hence the moniker. Though I suppose I might tune in whenever Bernstein rants about something way above his head.
