Post subject:  DePaul Broadcast

Did anyone hear the DePaul broadcast last night on SCR ? It was absolutely hysterical - the person providing the color commentary was hoarse - worse than Vermeil on the NFL game he did last month. But the guy would not shut up - as it was so important that a game in the middle of January between two also rans needed his commentary. After 5 minutes I couldn't listen anymore, it was making my throat sore. I just wonder why the heck someone didn't think, hey, you know what - you can't talk, so shut up.

I heard that ZZ-Holmes debacle last week and a Hoarse Dave Corzine would've sounded much better. Holmes sounded like he was trying to be an announcer - so he sounded like a black Jeff Joniack/a poor mans Jeff Joniack - and that's not saying much about either one.

Yes it was Corzine - thanks. But just the same, I'm sorry if this sounds a bit callous - but doesn't anyone higher up actually listen and think, maybe we should try a different strategy here until the guy can actually talk again or recovers from what is ailing him. It's really not good listening and can drive more of the audience away. You mean to tell me that in a market like Chicago you can't find someone - anyone - to fill this position? Or better yet, leave it vacant, let the play by play guy handle it until Dave recovers. It's amazing how arrogant and egotistical these guys are -thinking that it really matters who's announcing such an important Big East battle.

I heard a little of this last night and he still sounds horrible. That is really just an embarassment that they feel they need to put him out there. Put him on IR until that voice gets better.

Heard a bit of the game last night and couldn't understand a thing Corzine said. Whispering Dave makes Whispering Zach sound assertive. Maybe they could add Bill Cartwright to the broadcast?

...And maybe use Helen Keller as a sideline reporter?

It's inexcusable.

Even the lousy, crappy, woeful NFL Network pulled Dick (Vermeil) out of the booth from a Saturday night game and Deion Sanders/Marshall Faulk filled in.

There's no excuse for it.

He should have just shut his yapper. I felt like reaching through the radio and finishing the job by punching his larynx through his spine.

corzine has throat cancer.

No kidding. Could they put Corzine on the shelf for the rest of the year. I don't know what's worse Corzine's voice or his low post moves when he was with the Bulls.

I mean this is a major station. They let a guy who has no voice broadcast games? Who would do this? Oh yeah the Score. It might be a DePaul call as well. Zac says at the end of each broadcast that "the broadcasters are paid by DePaul"

Maybe they have to pay Corzine anyway because it's workmen's disability so they don't want to pay someone to replace him as well. Who cares if it's a horrible listen? We have a budget dammit. LOL.

I hadn't heard that. I hope he is OK. But if he has throat cancer, wouldn't it be better not to be on the air?

Post subject:

Nah. I agree with the Score and DePaul. If it is throat cancer. He should just walk it off or rub some dirt on it.

I believe I read that his doctors told him to use his vocals cords to strengthen them. I think it was a Trib article, not sure though.
Hey, if he still wants to do it, bully for him. I think DePaul gave him the choice, which was also admirable, IMO.

That's fine that they gave him the choice. But they shouldn't have. It doesn't mean you don't support him or care about him. And I hope he recovers.

But it's a proffesional broadcast. You can't subject your listeners to that.

Bring back Bernstein. Oh, wait. DePaul asked him not to do the priest jokes on his show and he did them anyway and was never invited back to do play by play. Too bad, Bernstein's play by play was pretty good.

That doesn't mean he has to do it on the air.
