By most accounts, the 15th anniversary celebration of sports/talk WSCR-AM (670) last week was a success. An array of Chicago sports celebrities joined stars of the CBS Radio station for a daylong broadcast at a northwest suburban sports bar to mark the Score's 15th year on the air.
Those who weren't there could hear and see the festivities via video streaming on the Score's Web site, where traffic more than doubled.

"The Score effectively bridged the technology gap by connecting our radio listeners with video images, a step that notes the changes happening in our business," said Paul Agase, vice president and general manager. "The ability to merge local content and extend the station's digital reach shows the extraordinary value of an already powerful medium."

Unfortunately, not everyone came away thrilled.

Richard Wilcox, a Score fan who attended the broadcast, wrote that he was shocked that the station did not provide "one free glass of cheap beer or one morsel of food" to ticket holders.

"Here's a multimillion dollar business whose radio programming contains 33.2 minutes of commercials per broadcast hour, and they feel a cheap bottle of beer or a hot dog is too much to give to their loyal fans," he wrote. "If I gave an anniversary like they did, I would be embarrassed."

Nice. We didn't really get these descriptions from the board attendees. I thought the whole thing was a little underwhelming. If you have time to fit Ramblin Ray into a day that is attempting to encapsulate 15 years of work, somebody is not doing his job.

Grid, are you serious? I think that's fine complaint. That's absolutely ridiculous that they want to "celebrate 15 years with their fans" for the entire day and don't provide any free food or beer at all!? That's like inviting people over to your kids graduation or something and saying, actually the cake is $1.25 per slice. Ridiculous. Hell the guys at ESPN had a 5 year anniversary and had free beer, golf, lunch, white sox tickets, more free beer and food. And those guys at The Score couldn't give out two beer tickets for the event? Sorry, that actually deserves Douchebag Award status Grid.

Ticket holders got a gift bag upon registering as you entered. A coffee mug and assorted promotional items. And you are correct, in a way it was a glorified remote, but they never said they'd be providing food or beverage at any juncture in announcing the contest, or on the ticket.

And Ryan, different strokes for different folks. How many people were at the ESPN shindig? I think you're comparing apples and oranges here.

Perhaps the whiner was pissed because he didn't have a VIP lanyard, and couldn't get into the VIP area for free food. I think that was mostly advertisers, employees, etc.

This is just a microcosm of society, somebody is always gonna be bitchin' about something.

I dunno... I guess that's the difference between me and others. I never look for handouts. If they gave out two free beers or sodas, then I'm sure somebody would bitch that it wasn't cocktails. No matter what you do, when you have hundreds of people, there's always gonna be somebody that's not happy.

Perhaps for their 10th Anniversary they gave out two drink tickets - that's a long time ago, I can't recall. But when they had that, most of the hosts remained upstairs with the VIPS - and I'm sure some people weren't happy about that.

Grid, I'm the same. I'm not "looking or searching for that free drink." But as Coach aslo said, I think its very reasonable that they supply some type of free drink and food when they want listeners to come and celebrate 15 years at their Score Party. I mean, its not like Silvy's running the event.

Forget that comparison, you're right. That probably wasn't the best comparison. Point is it was an event where the Score wanted to celebrate with their fans and I would think it would be common courtesy to have some free food and drink. Some...

Exactly Coach. Shit, its just a bunch of listeners drinking most likely anyway. Go to Aldi, buy about 500 hot dogs for 100 bucks (if that even) and ley'em out there. Again, Coach and I aren't saying there should be some five course meal. Just a few snacks. Its a FUCKIN PARTY Grid!

And it's not just a party. It was an invite only party. The host has complete control of the situation, including knowing a head count. I'll go a step further and say they should have had a breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet. It's not overly expensive and is completely deductible.

Grid, may I suggest you are confusing an open public event (a remote) with an invitation only party. I agree with you that it is fine what they did...if all they were doing was holding a REMOTE. But that's not what they were doing here. They threw an invitation only party and made the invitees pay for their food and drink. Very different things. If you want to treat it like a remote, then don't make it an invitation only party. If you want to quietly invite your friends and VIPS and buy them drinks fine. You can do that at any remote. But don't advertise something as a big anniversary party and then make the invited guests to your party pay for their food and drink. That's not a party...that's a remote. Had they had an anniversary party/remote open to all, that would have been an entirely different thing.

So who actually got invited besides sponsors? Was it just long-time callers or were they people who just were Scoreheads registered on their website picked at random?

If you wanted a free drink all you had to do was find Rock. He offered to go get drinks for my friend and me when I introduced myself.

Also, it was not "invite only," either. There were people there who were invited personally by Score employees, I'm sure, but the majority of attendees won their tickets through the station one way or another.

Furthermore, they rented out a large, popular sports bar for an entire day, which I am sure cost the station a lot of money, and given the amount of VIPs that were there drinking for free I am sure that Real Time took a hit, too. As Grid mentioned, there were giftbags to everyone who came in and they were handing out t-shirts too. Given the amount of stuff going on there (like doing their first live video stream, which I am guessing was also expensive), I do not see why anyone would expect them to also be handing out free booze and food to everyone who attended.

Yeah but that would be wrong to take advantage of Rock. If he bought drinks for 15 guys that would be his entire check. That was nice of Rock. Not that anybody has to buy drinks but you'd think Pappy, Boers and Bernsie would. They make good scratch. I'm sure Pappy did but I know Boers wouldn't buy a drink for a fan. Probrally not Bernsie either. Although I know he took off early.

Oh, well it's a little easier to be nice if that's the case. But still cool to make runs with his VIP card for the fans. I'll bet that bar tender thought he was a lush.

About this "they should have had free drinks" for the invited guests. I kind of agree. They could have done it without Mitch having to pay. Just have Miller or Bud give it out free and in return mention them every 20 minutes through the broadcast. Or just have Miller pay the bar a grand to give away drinks. Draft Beer cost nothing for Miller to give out. That's no sweat off miller.
