$24.3 million for 3 years for a guy who averaged 3 points, 5 rebounds with the Bulls, not to mention was plagued by foul trouble at times? Not a chance!

He's a luxury item for the Bulls. He's a good role player, protects the basket well, but doesn't offer much of anything offensively. They would probably match this deal in a second if Taj Gibson wasn't on the roster. They still may end up matching it, but spending that much money in the frontcourt is a mistake, particularly on backups.

I'd be more keen on keeping Asik if I thought there was room for significant improvement. I know he's only had 2 NBA seasons, but if you're 26-years-old and you lack the manual dexterity to both handle a pass and shoot from farther than 2 feet, I don't think that skill is going to magically develop. And his conditioning was at the point where on the rare ocassion he played more than 30 minutes, he was totally winded at the end of the game. I don't think that's the kind of thing that improves much past age 26 either.

He's a very solid defensive role player, but he's the 4th big man on the roster. Winning teams need players like him, but I don't know how the Bulls can justify it.

Yeah but they are going to do it. I mean there is no way they don't match it. And then any shred of faith I had left in that front office is gone. And really long overdue, anyhow.
