Actually, I've taken I-57 down to Memphis and just missed Cairo. Saw the exit for it, but most certainly did not check it out.

I did, however, briefly disembark at Charleston, Missouri, down in the bootheel. It was the first time in my life that I had been the only non-black person in a rural setting.

Lincoln. There's a city in this state that doesn't get enough shit. Bleak as fuck. Makes Springfield look lively.

You haven't lived until you visit Cairo. If the state needed an enema, this is where they'd stick the hose. I thought I was in the backwoods of Alabama. It's a really fucked up place. There's a lot of white trash in my nape of the neck, but this was a reality show waiting to happen. Legit scary.

I was driving to Memphis and saw Cairo at a point I was looking to take a little break. I figured it would be a quaint little river town with some Mark Twain history attached to it. Instead, it looked like a post apocalyptic movie set. Didn't even stop.

Cairo in addition to being the southern most city in the state of Illinois, apparently has a lovely history of racial intolerance.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cairo,_Illinois

The entry has one full section on lynchings and other on "Racial turbulence and economic decline". Yikes.

Yep. Reminded me of some bombed out village in Poland from World War 2.

So much of rural America is like that. In fact so much of America, in general, is like that. I was in Las Vegas on Monday visiting a customer. The plant was in this area of falling down 1950s trailer homes, looking like something you'd see in Port au Prince. Scary.

A friend of mine wrote her dissertation on Black Power in Cairo. She was struck by how deeply fucked-up a place it was, and is. She said it's basically a Deep South city that just happens to be situated in the Midwest.

I've always wanted to visit Cairo. The fucked up past intrigued me. I'm talking a 5-minute-drive-through-the-town-then-get-the-fuck-out type visit. It's only a couple hours south of where I grew up.

Jesus Christ they may as well have lifted a set from the Walking Dead and plopped it down in southern Illinois.

Is it really the Midwest though? It's further south than the capitol of the Confederacy and Louisville, Ky.

Avoid anything south of Mt. Vernon.

Funny you should say that--a big part of her dissertation was redefining Cairo as a sort of borderland that was economically Midwestern but culturally Southern.
