This may be the case if you're 5'8 3/4" and 145 lbs and you can go work out with your "buddies at the gym" every day before your radio show. For me, if I would have bought a tux when I was 20, my fat ass would have gotten 1, maybe 2 years out of it tops.

I'm thinking when he says it will pay for itself, what he's actually saying is 1) I make enough to drop 1k on a tux, and 2) I am invited to many "black tie" functions per year, including several casual affairs where I can show up in a tux anyway.

I guess if you went someplace where a tux is needed 3/4 times a year and you keep the same body type easily it makes sense.

I have a tux. I probably wear it once a year. I cannot remember needing a tux as a young man. The better advice would be to buy one very nice suit.
