These chain stores should develop an app so you can type in what you want and it tell you what aisle and shelf it's on. Tie it into the inventory system and it's a logistical wet dream.

great for people like me who when they enter a store they do so with the purpose of buying a specific item.... but that type of app would lead to people not wandering aro)und in stores making other impulse buys... right?

Home Depot has an app that works fairly well across their stores. Chain stores do a floor plan taking into account their size and layout that is replicated across the chain (i.e., Home Depot, Target), although some are better than others at their inventory control.

As for the wander/impulse buy factor, the less time you spend searching the more likely you are to actually see and look at the endcaps. When I know what and where I'm looking the endcaps seem to stand out as my attention isn't too narrow as I know that I'm going to be in and out quickly.

To the impulse buy problem ... you just pop-up other related items based on what others have bought (or, if/when personalized "lists" are stored on the store's servers, "reminders" of 'do you need milk? bread? condoms?).

Also, thanks to Jawbreaker ... a demonstrated person of quality!

Actually, pop-ups are an annoying turn off. A banner add on the bottom if I'm on their Wi-Fi is tolerable, but I'm one that has little tolerance for pop-ups (that one is at you CBS streaming audio).
