Hub Arkush: Chicago Bears need to fire Marc Trestman, Aaron Kromer

It has come to this. If Marc Trestman and Aaron Kromer are still in their jobs with the Bears by the end of the day Friday all hope is lost for the George McCaskey-Phil Emery regime.

It is one thing to be losing football coaches. Those guys are all over the league and they keep getting rehired all the time.

But it is another thing entirely to be the laughing stock of the entire National Football League and today that is exactly what the Bears are.

Why Trestman, you ask, when it was Kromer who messed the bed this time?

Is it possible to believe for a second that Trestman didn’t know what was going on before Kromer went into that meeting room and completely destroyed any of the very tiniest remnants of trust and respect these Bears players may have had left for this coaching staff? And lets face it, there sure couldn’t have been much.

If Trestman knew, he needs to be replaced for allowing it to happen. If he didn’t know, that’s even a greater indictment of this clown show he’s produced and it’s way past time he was fired.

This could be Emery’s last chance to save his job because certainly this is even more his mess than the coaches. He’s the guy who embarked on the longest, most thorough and ridiculous coach search in NFL history to bring his team to where it is today.

He may need to go too, possibly even sooner than later. Minimally he needs a football person installed above him who gets it and can guarantee this will never happen again.

But the jury is still out on Emery as a scout/personnel director, and by doing what needs to be done today, he can at least show that he gets what a mess he’s made and he’s willing to do the hard things to try and clean it up.

It isn’t looking good, but it’s still at least a few weeks too early to say all hope is lost with Emery as it is with these coaches.

Mention of Ted Phillips here is ignorant. He gave us the circus of the last few years of the Jerry Angelo, Lovie Smith, Pep Hamilton, Mike Martz, Shane Day, Mike Tice fiasco, answered it with this and shouldn’t be allowed in the room when the adults are talking football.

Phillips is obviously very good at squeezing nickels and I’m sure the McCaskeys are thrilled to have him. Fine by me but, get him the hell away from the football team.

Which brings us to George. As the Chairman, George McCaskey is the last line of defense for his family and Bears fans everywhere and only he can put an end to this public nightmare.

The debate about money is silly. We can total up all the damages later once the dust settles, but my quick math and estimation tells me it could cost the Bears about $8.5 million to fire Trestman and Kromer, and between $14 million and $16 million if it comes to blowing up the whole staff and Emery.

Any one who doesn’t understand that the value and eventual revenues of this business have been damaged by more than $15 million with the embarrassments of this season and in particular the last 24 hours has no business running this business.

What about Jay Cutler? Another time please, he’s an innocent victim in this conversation and it has nothing to do with him.

Let me make this as clear as I possibly can. I really like Emery and Trestman, I believe they are good people and there aren’t enough of those in the world today. Honestly I don’t really know Kromer but he seems like a good guy too.

And I know Christmas and good will towards all is right around the corner.

Suggesting these guys get paid millions of dollars to go sit at home and watch with the rest of us as someone else tries to clean up their mess isn’t that horrible a thing, it is what’s right.

The Chicago Bears were once one of the greatest teams in all of sports, today they are a punchline and it makes me want to cry.

It can be fixed, but that hard work has to start today.

Good for Hub. He is the only Bears reporter with the balls to say this. Zach should take note.

Zach is paid by the team. There is a huge difference there. Would you criticize your bosses for everybody to hear?

That fact doesn't stop the majority of the board from echoing the same type of thoughts....like ZZ is a Bears buttsuck artist.

Hub was king of the Bears ALS when he had Zach's job.

Michael McCaskey's cabana boy is what I believe North used to call him.

Of course he is, but ZZ and Hub are not in the same situation. It's easy for Hub to fire away at a former employer.

Hub has little credibility because for years he did what Zach does now, defend the Bears at every turn, then after being fired he ripped the Bears at every turn.

Doesnt exactly portray the guy without an axe to grind or an employer to protect.

+1

Hub is big on opinion after the fact and doesn't let the facts get in the way. He used to carry the water for the McClaskey's and after being dumped was still hesitant to speak critically in the hopes of being asked back. Ask him what/who he likes and you get a glimpse of his special brand of genius.

There are times when the media becomes so in love with its' self that it creates an echo chamber. Between second guessing and increasing the volume of vitriol, they have little of substance to say and even less than they care to remember, or admit to remembering. Firing everybody, or really anybody, today does little to nothing to address the future except to do something for the sake of doing something, which in turn gives the media another round of grist for the mill.
