Separated from its source, I think that Deadspin piece is a refreshing take. But I suppose for it to be refreshing it has to be contextualized amongst the myriad of sports-blog websites proselytizing for a purely objective version of sports fandom, which really doesn't mean much considering pretty much every one specializes in that particular brand of ass-hattery these days.

And now that I've re-read that first paragraph I realize that I've tossed out an over-hypenated word-salad thought that only Dan Bernstein could be proud of. Fuck me.

every time someone links to gawker, deadspin, whatever...as a "source", a child dies. it's a collective of post grad brats who want to be cool so they use vulgarity to get a point across that's so blatant and overt that it's just insulting to read and have wasted time reading.

you're right though that "regular" sports journalism (or any at this point) has gotten so beyond the black hole that i think a lot of people are desperate for a reality check. but all those "writers" do is attack others and mock them...not in a satirical way, but in a juvenile fratboy way. and they call that news...

What’s exasperating, though, isn’t just the creeping assumption that sports are as much about smart portfolio management as impressive athletic feats

That seems to be the way many people enjoy sports these days- from the perspective of an executive rather than that of a player. jimmypasta and I grew up waggling our fingers on bats pretending to be Ernie Banks. Today's kid plays in a fantasy league pretending to be Theo Epstein.

I thought you were a Sox fan?

I am. But Ernie at the plate was distinctive and iconic. Also, I grew up on the North Side. All of my friends were Cub fans. At some point I began to waver in my allegiances. I think I even had a Santo poster in my room. My old man took swift action and brainwashed me into adopting the Mets as my NL team.
