Dan's position previously on garpax was they did what they could to get lebron and it didnt work, so what else can they do to get a title?

Last week, thursday or Friday I think, Terry started down the road that I have called in about a few times...namely, that the Bulls were not a championship team with Tibs but because they worked so hard they were not only watchable but enjoyable...these guys can turn on a coach in a matter of weeks. Just ask Marc Trestman.

Fred is quite obviously too taciturn of a coach. It's one thing to say "oh, he doesn't get excited on the sidelines, but in practice, man he's a live wire!" But it's another thing to hear Fred say that he DOES yell some, which if you have to say such things means you probably don't, and so proves the point.

This started in transition but last segment they also said the current Bulls look like the perfect example of an NBA team being coached by an in over his head college guy. They also specifically said he should be able to use his long-term deal to command more respect from the players since it should be clear he's not going anywhere. It should be said Butler is the one they've reserved the most hatred for today but it seems the tides are turning on The Mayor.

I heard someone yesterday write in about how hard it is for great college coaches to become great NBA coaches: Rick Pitino, John Calipari, so on. Fred Hoiberg isn't even in that class of coaches. What did anyone think would happen?

I'm not even sure Hoiberg would have been a finalist at Kentucky if the job had become available.

The funny thing is that a week or so ago Dan was railing about how colleges are stupid because they want a guy with a connection to the school and how instead you should just get the best available candidate. All the while the Bulls picked a guy because he sat on the bench watching good players play well.

Dan says a lot of well-worn dumb stuff, so I want to commend him for this new flavor of dumb: LOOK AT HIS CONTRACT TERM! Who has ever done this and when has it worked? In a league where good coaches like Scott Skiles or Stan Van Gundy -- and Hall of Famers like Kevin McHale or Jerry Sloan -- lose their jobs because the players quit on them, when has a crappy coach ever engendered the respect of his charges by saying that his bosses like him too much to fire him, so don't even try not trying? Talk about begging to be taken up on it! Holy shit, what a stupid idea.

I was a big fan of the notion that Hoiberg would get better responses from players than other NCAA coaches since he was an active NBA player just a short while ago and also had assistant coaching experience in the league. Because I'm sure a bunch of current NBA players will have no choice but to respond to a guy who was mediocre in the league and was on the bench for Minnesota while they were one of the worst teams in the West. I think at one point Dan even made the specific argument that he'd connect to the players since guys like Rose and Butler probably remembered him from his playing days

He was on that 2004 team that was actually good, though. I remember the T-Wolves doing a balloon/confetti drop after they won the first round.

EDIT: I don't know how those bombs got in there but I'm leaving them

The mere fact that you don't have to have NBA playing experience or high quality NBA playing experience to be a successful NBA coach goes without saying. The problem with Dan's argument is that he justified faith in Hoiberg's ability to lead in large part on his playing experience.

To be fair, it's not any organization but a Reinsdorf-helmed one, thus not likely to pay out that much coaching $, especially to TWO of them.

Whoops, sorry, that'd be a pernicious myth...

Riley was a first round pick though.
