The delay in finding or announcing a replacement is so stupid. It's not like Mitch hasn't had time. It's not like he needs to have a waiting period out of respect to Terry (I'm pretty sure it was announced Leno would replace Carson before Carson's last show).

And to say you're looking inside and outside is dumb. Everyone inside is a known entity... no up and comers who haven't had on-air chances here and there.

That's because they did things correctly and capitalized on the interest in the final show to immediately move into the new show.

They didn't play a bunch of Carson reruns for 3 weeks and then launch the new show.

But they chose the wrong person...Letterman was the best choice for that spot...and Carson wanted it that way too.

If you remeber, it was publically admitted that the reason McNeil didn't resign a few years ago was that he wanted the afternoon drive. It's easier to wake up from whatever bender when you don't have to be at the office until noon and you can skip all that morning traffic on the Dan Ryan/Skyway.
