He was doing mornings at 890 for a while after Don Wade died, but he's been off for about two years and seems to be blackballed from 670.

One of the more interesting things they said yesterday was that Mike North only got a job because Bruce Wolf said no.

Could you imagine if we had just celebrated 17 years of Bernstein and Bruce Wolf?

He also hates the blacks.

I happened to be on a plane Chicago-Albany many years ago with Lester and his wife seated in the row behind me. He was wearing his trademark black shirt, which I thought he only wore for TV so you could find him. They were going to Sarataoga as the season was beginning, I was going to a client.

For me, the Sportswriters on WGN was appointment listening. Especially before they got the TV show. Best possible lineup for me was Bentley, Jauss, Gleason, Boers.

No shit. That's why I'm a national heritage broadcaster and Bernstein is relying on the Cubs to make his bonus.

I remember listening to Swirskey on Sunday nights on WMET (Classic Rock station in late 70's/early 80's). His lead-in song was Fire on High by ELO & his tag-line was "The Bottom Line on Sports". (later adopted by Bruce Wolf/Chet Chit-Chat as The Lobotomy Line on sports).

Live from the Thirsty Whale. I always wondered who was hanging out at a bar that late on a Sunday night for a live sports talk show remote.

Long time occasional reader, first time poster.

I've been listening to B&B for years, since I moved back to the city in 2003 but never really thought about this until seeing Terry and Dan sign off before Xmas and again yesterday.

I know if anyone can give me the straight answer its this place: Do Terry and Dan like each other? They were a solid team, played off each other etc, but when the shows were coming to an end it seemed like Dan was trying to give him tons of praise but it just seemed fake like most of the times Dan tries to act genuine. And Terry acknowledged the praise but then just kind of moved on, didn't seem particularly touched for someone that has worked alongside Dan for 18 years. And yesterday Dan gave his same spiel and in his fashion took over the broadcast. when Terry finally got a word in, he quickly dismissed Bernstein and moved on. He seemed to enjoy speaking with the other Score originals a lot more.

What's the true story? They can stand each other professionally but Dan is just too much of a douche to be liked off the air?

I think this quote speaks volumes re: Terry's feelings about dan:

"I think people want to see you. They don't want to see a guy talking sports and just be an idiot yelling at people."

I believe they spent most of their time together being "coworkers". When Terry got sick, Dan was really there for him in many ways and Terry really seemed to appreciate it and understand that they were more than just coworkers. In the past few months there were multiple emotional discussions between them that couldn't be faked.

The "radio schtick" of Dan makes it hard to sometimes believe him when he is showing genuine emotion and caring. However, you are right that Dan talked a little bit too much for something that was supposed to be about Terry. That is probably why they had Dan on as a guest instead of a co-host though.

I have a colleague in the office next to me whom I have known for nearly 35 years, since our first day at graduate school. We are friends, and we built this outpost of our company's office from the ground up over the last twenty years from back when we were both teleworkers. My mom threw the baby shower for their first child, and I've known his wife since she was only his girlfriend. We've been there for each other through both happy and tragic events in our lives. When we teleworked, i used to pick his daughter up from school when he was on business travel.

But we really don't socialize outside of work. We have very different interests and tastes. When one of us eventually retires (probably me first), we'll probably get together for lunch 2-3 times a year and catch up. It's just not that type of every day social setting type of friendship.

I believe that's what Terry and Dan have. Dan can be concerned and helpful and supportive through Terry's illness. But outside of work, what do they really have in common? I don't think it's like Garry Meier who eventually ends up hating his co-host for either valid or invalid reasons.

That's probably it. I mean there is a 20 year age difference between them. You really can't be close friends with that big of a gap.

Don Wade died? WTF when? Bruce Wolf was his temporary replacement? I assume not with Roma. I apparently haven't turned on WLS in a long time.

About three years ago. Bruce Wolf and Dan Proft were doing the 9a-11a slot of doom and got bumped up to mornings. Roma and her reads for bacteria pills that make you shit like a goose quietly disappeared. I think Dan Proft got fired first, then Bruce, then Big John Howell came in.

He had brain cancer. Discovered several years ago when they were attending one of their kids weddings IIRC. He's been gone a while but he and Roma (who they finally admitted was his wife after many years of hiding it) were still hosting when the illness was diagnosed.

damn. I didnt know about Don Wade either. Or Bill Jauss. I use to keep running into Jauss in 89/90. Taste of Chicago, downtown, ballpark, everywhere. He always gave me that quizzical look like 'who the fuck are you and why do we keep seeing each other'.

Sportswriters on TV was a great show. I think it led to the Score in an offhand way.

If Bruce Wolf got hired when the Score was created, it would have probably only lasted 3 mo. And I like Wolf. Wasn't he still hanging w/ Dahl around that time or did they part ways by then?

I remember when Don Wade died and the obituary talked about all his hi-larious radio characters from before his stint at 890 and they all had amazingly un-woke names like "Richard Sucker" and "Howie Fildmie" and I was kind of amazed that everyone was talking about him as a radio legend, because apparently his whole career was either broad gay jokes or throwing it to news, traffic, and shitting-pill reads. It pales in comparison to getting a Sox game cancelled, I'll tell you that much right now.

Man interesting about Wade. I always thought it was known him and Roma were married. Anyway I spent 9-11 with Wade and Roma. It was on in the office that morning and I listened to them for awhile. Then shortly after I never listened to wls again.

They were "Private Parts" and "Peter Suckwell," as it turns out.

I was a huge B&B fan and then a not so huge fan. Anyways, I too always wondered the extent of what they felt about each other. I don't have a better answer, but I will say this. I watched most of the Boers farewell on the Facebook feed. When Dan finished, he was visibly very emotional, really wiping back tears. And here's the thing, when they panned to Terry, so was he. Sure, it's what I saw through the screen, but it looked pretty damn real.

They are work friends. I don't think they pretend to be more. Nothing wrong or disingenuous about that.
