This was the quote that got me. I know he wants to believe that because that is basically the entire point of that mess.

But, it's not true. They do inherit "some shared history". The same way Presidents that live in the White House inherit some shared history or radio hosts that take over a drivetime slot at a sports station inherit some shared history.

It may not mean much to the players on the field or it may mean a great deal. But, like it or not, Anthony Rizzo shares some history with Ernie Banks and Mark Grace and Larry Biittner because they played the same position in the same uniform on the same field.

I think it's 1000 words of garbage for Dan Bernstein to say that no Cub players care about the past or the fans. Some probably don't give a shit. Some may think it is very cool. He doesn't know. He just wants to believe it.

Years ago someone here said that Bernstein is a dumb person's idea of what a smart person sounds like.

Actually, thinking about it, I'm underselling how bad his thought is.

A good portion of the Cub players absolutely know and care to some extent about the history. I'd guess the majority. They're professional athletes. They are looking for any edge, any thought to motivate them. Hell, Dick Butkus used to make up shit to motivate him. Jordan, quite naturally, held a high school grudge for 25 years.

There's no question those guys walk out to "their office" in June and see 40k fans out there and think to themselves what it would be like here in a NLCS or World Series. They aren't doing it for the fans. But that doesn't mean that fans can't motivate them. History can motivate them. Among other things.

In summary, that article should be humped by a cow in heat.
