Mitch Rosen, program director of WSCR "SportsRadio 670 The SCORE, Chicago's Sports Station and Voice of the Fan," announced that the Illini would move their Chicago-area broadcasts from Salem-owned WIND, where Illinois's flagship university had languished for eight years, to the CBS Radio-owned 50,000-watt sports talker. This adds to their sizable footprint throughout the state of Illinois and beyond.

"Adding U of I football and hoops to our 'team roster' will allow us to increase revenue dramatically," noted CBS Chicago regional president Rod Zimmerman, adding "with the Illini and Bears [at news radio sister stations WBBM-AM and WCFS-FM] as part of our family, Chicago listeners and advertisers will really score a touchdown."

"Also, by increasing our play-by-play commitments, we won't have to pay for as many on-air shifts," Zimmerman continued.

The longtime sports talker garnered minor controversy in recent years by being critical of the Illinois basketball program, accusing U of I officials of obstructing justice, hiring an unqualified head coach, and insisting upon dressing a 20-year-old up as an Indian. In turn, devoted Illini fans accused longtime afternoon hosts Terry Boers and Dan Bernstein of 'hurting Illini recruiting.'"
