On today's show, the Caleb/father "controversy" came back up yet again. Leila feels strongly that he should be addressing this issue publicly. Last week, she did not like being questioned by the texters to the station and came across (to me) as very defensive/unlikeable vs. just realizing that not everyone has to agree and that actually makes a Bears topic, in May, slightly more interesting. On today's show, she came across more constructive in wanting to discuss the topic, but then went on to refer to Bears fans as naive for not getting why this matters so much and that the story isn't dead despite him playing for the Bears last season.
Progress in her approach, but no reason to suggest that people who don't agree with her don't understand. I think people just disagree. I tend to think that Caleb's actions ended the topic. He played for the Bears. I'm fine if they have questions for him, and don't care if he addresses it, but we know what he's going to say - he loves Chicago, this is where he wants to win, etc. I don't know what else anyone would think he say. In any case, I think she is a much better host when she doesn't sound like she's being defensive or taken aback by opposing of views. Also, probably should stop reading the text line or this message board if it upsets her so much - she still can't go long on the show without bringing up that not everyone likes her.
It was actually the co-host who called Bears fans naive, not Leila, though she didn't disagree and thinks that Bears fans are just very afraid to being wrong on another QB.
I thought her argument - that because Caleb isn't speaking on this topic, she's going to wonder if he's fully in on the Bears when he doesn't have a good game or make a key play - is questionable.
Since being drafted, Caleb has been as in publicly on the Bears as you could have hoped. We don't know the time of effort he puts into film study (we know he was watching film by himself last season) or other parts of his game and only know that Ben Johnson has spoken highly of his work ethic so far.
Besides her argument being poor (she then went on to say that's not what she was saying when she read a text questioning her view that Caleb may not be all-in), does Caleb really talking about how he loves Chicago and the Bears really going to change her opinion if she feels he may not be fully committed to Chicago? We know what Caleb will say when he eventually addresses this. It's just odd to me that he needs to say what will be obvious to everyone as some sort of relief/validation that he's on-board, all while ignoring his actions since being drafted.
The station is trying to have Bears content everyday. It's May. There just isn't much going on. I think the station (including this show) thought they had a hot topic that would drive conversation and they haven't come around to the fact that most people see this as a non-story because he just played a full season here and has only provided evidence of his excitement of being in Chicago since.
