I would rather have Shaq.

Shaq dominated at many things but free throws? I'd rather take the Dream, I couldn't foul him in the last two mins of a game, unlike Shaq. Plus, nothing was so smooth like the Dream Shake.

I'm with Matty when it comes to Springsteen and Bono. However, I do think Dylan is a genius.

Dylan can't sing and is a marginal writer. He is awful and couldn't raise a dime on the street corner without the hype machine of music media.

Maybe I'm wrong but hasn't B&B said that you're an idiot if you don't like/root for Lebron? Maybe that was just my perception but they just told that last caller they never said that. But I swear that's been their meme for the last month. I mean, if they didn't say that then what the hell have they been ridiculing people for the last couple months?

Yes.

Terry introduces Larry. The first sentence begins, "The one thing I tell my kids...." Fuck you professor!

* MLB: Ty Cobb,Pete Rose? (maybe) What about Ruth or Dimaggio? (no)

* In Football: Payton,Emmit Smith,Bradshaw,Marino,Joe Montana-Nobody hated.

* In Hockey: Gretzky,Bobby Hull, Jaques Plante,Lemeiux-Don't think so.

LeBron hate unprecedented in the world of sports?

Personally, outside of that FA escapade,I think LeBron is OK. He seems to answer all the questions with interviews. He presents him self well. It all stems from that debacle (teasing teams) from a few years ago, that's about it.

So what did you guys think of Friday Fung? Bad summer jobs as a yute. Mostly bad....some good though. My text didn't even get read about pulling weeds at Steve Dahl's Lake Effect shop in summer of '88. Was there 2 days pulling weeds and quit....brutal!

I was in your neck of the nape this afternoon.....the burger joint across from Buffalo Wings and Rings at 35th and Halsted. I can't remember the name of the place now, but it was full of White Sox stuff....pretty cheap prices. 8)

Any good Dahl stories? Did he puke on you? Offer you a rail? Did he try to screw you over on your check?

I never even saw him at the store, but my parents had a place in Warwick Shores (yeah, I know....fatha) where Steve had a unit. My cousin was riding his skateboard and nearly ran into Steve. Steve basically yelled something like "You crazy kids and your skateboards!". He kind of kept to himself at the deck parties they used to have.

One weird story that Steve actually talked about on-air with Gary was when my little sister and his boys of the same age where playing a game together at about age 9 or so, they called it "naked circus". Nobody was actually naked, but the name sure was disturbing......kids and their weird games they come up with. I wish I could remember more about the story. I'll have to ask her about it next time I see her.

This is utter crap. From the last 25 years alone:

MLB: A-Rod, Chipper Jones, Clemens (even before the steroid allegations), Bonds (ditto)

NFL: Marino, Elway, Favre, Brady, Irvin, Deion, both Mannings

NHL: Roy, Scott Stevens, Pronger, Crosby

I'm sure I'm missing dozens of others.

Wha??? I don't seem to recall that Marino, Elway, Brady, either Manning, or even Favre (first half of his career, anyway) were "despised".

I'll give you Deion and Irvin...

I think a significant portion of the population was happy to see the Patriots lose the Super Bowl last year, and I think a similarly large portion would have been as happy to see Eli denied a second ring as they were to see Peyton denied a second ring two seasons before. I may be wrong about that, and maybe that doesn't fit the definition of "despised." It's an inexact science. I was mainly arguing against the totality of the statement. I don't think the invective thrown LeBron's way is somehow larger or deeper or uglier than that faced by other major athletes who were widely perceived as dickholes.

The part where Bernstein et al. get it right is that LeBron is uniquely hated; because we live in a more mediated age, every bit of that hate is endlessly publicized, scrutinized, and discussed. Of course, the flipside, which Bernstein et al. love to vociferously deny, is that said mediation means that LeBron is also the most publicly defended athlete in the world right now. Skip Bayless and Adrian Wojnarowski are the exceptions that prove the rule. The mainstream sports media is basically a PR firm for LeBron at this point.

I don't know. Where you stand is where you sit. It's the same thing as the Tebow stuff. Yeah, you get the grit and toughness and determination guys like Thom Brenaman, but from my vantage point 90% of the stuff pointed his way is invective, which doesn't seem fair for a league average QB. But if you hate the guy all you hear is HE JUST WINS.

"The Greatest of All Time" can be interpreted in so many ways... what is Bernstein arguing on behalf of Lebron here?

Greatest career of all time? Not even close at this point....

Most transcendent in terms of popularity and appeal? Again, not even close....

Most unique? An argument could be made.... but it wouldn't be right.

Most dominant player at a given point in one's career? This would probably be his best argument, but it is still wrong.

It is quite obvious that Jordan's greatness was about more than just being the most dominant player at a given time (though I believe he was). He was also fortunate in that he was around during the right era, the right stories played out, he had a long career free from injuries (mostly), and he was a charismatic personality who transcended sports. Jordan's greatness was about more than just being a dominant player - circumstance and personality certainly played into the legend of Michael Jordan, but it is just as subjective to discount these things as it is to let them factor into the argument. How can we know for sure whether the circumstances that helped Jordan become who he was wouldn't have occurred if he had played in any other era? We don't, and it is impossible to separate the two. In my eyes, he is clearly the greatest basketball player to ever set foot on a court at this point in time.
