I could think of another word to describe Steve Alford and it's also not very nice. He supposedly agreed to a 10 year extension to stay at New Mexico before using it as leverage to get the UCLA job.

I bet there are kids that wanted to play at New Mexico before Alford left for Westwood. I also think those kids would love to get out of their letter of intent, too.

Yes, Alford is a scumbag. If he were black and played for Kentucky they would not spend nearly this much time ripping him.

I'm curious why you think this?

Mike Wallace was quite the journalist. He made people sweat when grilling them on "60 Minutes" back in the day.

I may get a B & B bingo in one post here Mike. Alford, slow, tiny, white, grindy, good shooter, no floor game, played for Bob Knight. Fits the profile for why they dont like a guy right out of the chute.

Bingo

While they pull their punches on most black sports figures, I have a hard time believing anyone who did what Alford did would get any sort of break. He's the worst.

So, back to Boers and Bernstein. We're running range on Steve Alford. Unlike CTE, Penn State and Lance Armstrong, I can get behind this campaign. I played with and against Pierre Pierce and he was a menace to society.

City, did you play with him while he was at Westmont?

 This show is off it's rocker.

Opening day, Blackhawks and they're talking Steve Alford.

The 1+ year slump continues. PTFBing after transition seems to be the wisest strategy now...

Partial defense. Had some friends in UNM circles that were aware of Alford's transgressions and approached his hire with skepticism. Prior to his quick departure they honestly felt the guy had turned a corner. Alford to a degree of knew that he screwed up (hard to admit much with a huge I ego) and wasn't doing the same type of thing at UNM. One of them coached one of his sons in high school. They weren't entirely distant observers. Haven't chatted with them since the departure.

It's kind of a challenge for the fellers to allow a guy to screw up and move on. Given the circumstances of the Pierce situation I understand why.

I'm convinced that behind any successful program is a dirty coach.

Maybe they turned on him because he won't come on their show anymore?

Bernsie has his personal agendas ....Lance,Sandusky, Bonds, Seaver, etc,Where he thinks his platform will have a major effect on these events. Which apparently doesn't mean shit to anyone except lil Danny.

Oh great a really smart doctor coming on. Wonder what knee rehab he wants to talk about?

Also, can we give "heritage anything" a break from the vernacular?

Maybe I'm "stupid" as I sometimes forget or never originally grasped the narrative, then again it doesn't hurt to get a refresher. Of all the things local to talk about, Pro and college, I don't get why Alford being hired by UCLA ranks as the most noteworthy.

I read the committee report that Bernstein cited http://news-releases.uiowa.edu/2003/apr ... orton.html and didn't come away seeing Alford in a particularly negative light. As the report stated, the decision to pursue criminal charges is that of the state (county) and any settlement of charges is also done to their satisfaction. And as a report recommendation, it would be in the best interest of the university to not have its employees (that would include coaches) speak on pending criminal matters. Interestingly, in trying to read more of Alford I came across this link http://www.bruinsnation.com/ucla_basket ... background from the perspective of a Hawkeye backer. In the middle of the post is a link referencing what Alford did. The only problem, it links to a CBS Chicago blog written by a certain radio host http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/03/31/ ... h0.twitter and nowhere in the report is Bernstein's claim supported.

Maybe there's another report or source of information out there that will not keep me stupid. Maybe I should just let Dan or Terry do the thinking for me, at least then they can't call me stupid (can they?).

Maybe I've read enough and will go back to not giving a shit.

Any discussion of Buzz Williams?

Or, is he cool because he was more successful at covering things up?

They haven't turned on him. They still speak well of The Great Tom Izzo.

They've bashed Izzo plenty the past few months. It started with the Bruce Weber firing but it's even more now since he did it again with Tubby.

Right. I have no problem with them banging on Alford for a little while immediately after he gets the UCLA job. I just don't care about him enough to hear the same goddamn shit over and over again every single day. And dan is like a dog with a bone with stuff like this. It allows him to do Very Important Radio. And now he has callers sucking his balls begging him to dedicate weeks of the show to the sins of Steve Alford and acting like these two buffoons made the collar on Jerry Sandusky right there in the Penn State showers.

My question: Does Steve still pull up his socks and lick his fingertips before every free throw?

Seriously,I don't know how a guy with the "boy next door" image turned into such a creep. I remember B&B talking about how he tried to get the victim drop the charges using a religous front to go and talk to her.

Bobby Knight was his mentor. We already know how Knight feels about rape.

yeah it's part of his newfound responsibility since he became the FOTS. he sees the sacrosanct quasi/moral crusading as "doing something" for his listeners that's more important than "silly meaningless sports"

Knight was his coach, but I do not think Alford or Knight would say there was ever a mentor type of relationship.

In Alford's book Playing for Knight he is pretty critical of Knight. And Knight has never been a big fan of Alford. So I don't think anyone can blame Alfords shortcomings on learning it from Knight.

Knight has a laundry list of his own short comings but I do not think he would have ever allowed the situation that took place at Iowa to go on under his watch.

They'd judge the guy and rip him but it wouldn't be a long running thing.
