If no one bought the tickets to sit outside in cold weather, the games wouldn't be on TV.

I think the ideal location to play all NFL games is on an indoor soundstage with robotic cameras.

There should just be computer simulations to decide the winning team.

But that sort of 'discussion' dominates most pregame shows anyway. Unless there's some breaking story just prior to the game, I think most pregame shows are rather insufferable and a complete waste of time. The only thing you need to know before a game is that your team will win if it outscores the other team. All other analyses during pregame shows are repeating what I just said in the prior sentence, regardless of this or that special play, this player, or that player, etc.

And the "I hate Ditka" discussions/calls begin.

for about five years 1983-87 or so, I don't see how you could have hated Mike Ditka.

I don't think that's correct. He was more accessible to the media than any coach I can remember.

You can be accessible and still be a douche. He treated Johnny Morris, one of his old teammates like one.

But it was entertaining television nonetheless.

They treated each other like douchebags. Johnnie obviously thought he was smarter than Ditka and made no effort to hide it. I think local TV star and longtime Chicago guy Johnnie was jealous that Ditka came in and owned the town.

You are forgetting the era. Local sports broadcasts were still the principal source for sports news at the time. Johnnie and Jeannie Morris were the darlings of the industry. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Johnnie's TV contract was greater than Ditka's coaching contract in 1985.

That's exactly what I mean. When Ditka came in it wasn't long before he was the King of Chicago. Even before the Super Bowl really. It started when he cut Rickey Watts right off the bat. Morris was clearly jealous. Look at those Drunk Ditka postgames. Morris knows he's loaded and he fucks with him.

From transition, there is nothing I'm rooting for more than a blizzard hitting the Super Bowl to mess up Goodell's party for the sponsors, esp given the fact the NFL is telling fans they can't tailgate in the parking lots:

Consider the source ... there's nothing to explain as only the lowest common denominator of person would even pretend to think that.

I'm sure you're right. Based on what the players were getting in 1985, wouldn't shock me if Ditka made under 100k in 1985. It's amazing to see how much sports blew up with the money and salaries from this time period.

This was published in the January 10, 1986 Chicago Sun Times. According to the paper, signing bonuses and incentives are not included in these figures.

Offense
Jim McMahon, Quarterback, $600,000
Walter Payton, Running Back, $685,000
Matt Suhey, Running Back, $260,000
Willie Gault, Wide Receiver, $241,000
Dennis McKinnon, Wide Receiver, $100,000
Jim Covert, Left Tackle, $190,000
Mark Bortz, Left Guard, $90,000
Jay Hilgenberg, Center, $110,000
Tom Thayer, Right Guard, $160,000
Keith Van Horne, Right Tackle, $225,000
Emery Moorehead, Tight End, $200,000

Defense
Dan Hampton, Defensive End, $325,000
Steve McMichael, Defensive Tackle, $225,000
William Perry, Defensive Tackle, $138,250
Richard Dent, Defensive End, $90,000
Otis Wilson, Linebacker, $150,000
Mike Singletary, Linebacker, $200,000
Wilber Marshall, Linebacker, 250,000
Mike Richardson, Cornerback, $175,000
Leslie Frazier, Cornerback, $130,000
Dave Duerson, Strong Safety, $125,000
Gary Fencik, Free Safety, $275,000

Here's one if somebody wants to take it.

For the Dan Bernsteins of the world that say that the Ditka thing is a thing of the past that you almost feel sorry for those that still cling to it, the most popular segment your radio station has ever had and one that is STILL used on YOUR SHOW every week is based on old Orange Face ripping into your elder statesman. So, who are you crappin'?

Somebody throw in a couple $20 words and an obscure literary reference and it might get read.

Some guy (not SomeGuy) called to say NFL players shouldn't wear pink because it "sissifies" them. Bernsie spent 5 minutes trying to get the guy to say he hates gay people but the guy never went near the gay thing and just said it was a "girl color" and then he hung up.

Bernstein would counter Doc's argument by saying, "Look, dumb ass Ditka gave us a radio bit". So what? We're not celebrating Ditka with WYC, it's just a segment where people call in to rip on people. We could call it anything."

Then he would call Doc a dumb ass for being an adult and still rooting for his College's sports teams to win.

Sounds like quality radio. The people prefer that sort crap on the radio over Ditka talk really must have an IQ of zero.
