Curious, I'm sure you've written about the NHL's TV deal with NBC before. What's your opinion on it again? I liked the deal very much. I don't know what Mr. TV Exec Bernstein thought the NHL should've gotten.

Pete Fewtack sounds like a troll.

It's the biggest U.S. contract in the history of the league and NBC has devoted itself to marketing the NHL far more than ESPN would have. It's hard to find fault with it. The only problem for the NHL is that they played it very safe and signed a ten-year contract. If interest in the league keeps trending upward as sharply as it did last year, $200 million a year could be a tremendous bargain for NBC.

What's really startling is how lazy sports radio guys are. I mean, really. It doesn't take loads of resources to figure these things out today. The internet has made this sort of thing free, easy, and fast. A host should be able to do it while hosting the show, or at least during a break.

It's worth more than the NBC contract -- $5.2 billion CDN over twelve years -- but it also contains a provision that the seven Canadian teams get a little more than a 1/30 share and the American teams a little less. I believe the previous deals with CBC and TSN gave every team an equal share.
