I used to think "three-technique" meant there were three specific ways that the player (say, Tommie Harris) played his position. I probably thought that because that's what it sounds like and apparently we can't just call him a defensive tackle.

And you were still able to follow the game?

All this shit is a joke. Did Madden cause this? I dunno, never played it.

For whatever it's worth, Dan has been ranting about how the Cover 2 needs a three-technique since well before his big-boy crush on Matt Bowen.

Well yeah, even I knew that. Since the draft of Harris it was always said how important that was to the defense.

it all sounds like BS to me. a 4-3 defense needs two DTs. If one of them is playing the 3-technique, what is the other one doing, whistling dixie?

It means nothing about technique, just where they line up. 3 technique is on the outside shoulder of a guard. Each position has a number.

I realize that. So a guy like Tommie Harris lined up outside the guard on every single play? I would think you would want to move things around so the O-Line doesn't know exactly what is coming.

Where is the other DT lined up and what is he called?

Harris' quickness and positioning meant the O-line had to pay attention to where he was. Unblocked defenders tend to wreck even the best schemed of offensive plays. Harris also moved around which meant the need for the O-line (and even blocking backs) to make adjustments.

The Tampa-2 is a conservative defense that forces offenses to attack its' known weak spots. With a guy like Harris up front the deeper routes were low probability, and a corner like Tillman was most effective in short press covereage, taking away the short route. Factor in the range of Urlacher and Briggs and the defense made some passing plays high-risk propositions.

The other DT lines up inside in the 1 position and needs to be stout enough to handle a double-team run block.

so 3-technique has come to mean a quicker DT who excells at pash-rushing as opposed to run stopping.

Just give me two badasses who abuse linemen and want to kick somebody's ass.

Yeah, I mean, there's no "magic scheme," right?

I think if you're breaking down film or designing plays this number system makes sense. But defining players into narrow places where they line up really doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Just a way to pretend you are a VERY SMART PEOPLE.

From the Browns' SBNation blog:

Quote:

This is a little confusing as it not only breaks a pattern but also puts the 7 technique inside the 6 technique. Why is it this way? No one is really sure. To quote Paul Johnson, head coach at Georgia Tech:

No one knows why that is the case but Coach (Bear) Bryant numbered it that way and no one has the guts to change it.

Really Smart Alabaman.

Agree that you play the defense you have people for.

I am fine with finding the 2 biggest guys in the league and go from there. As a GM I would draft the largest guys left in the 3rd round every single year.

People dont remember Keith Traylor came in as a 275 DE, or tried to play DE in denver. He ate a ton and became a pop machine.

While the theory of having some guy at the 1 Tech swim over the center and mess up the pocket is nice, give me the 2 guys in the middle you cant move and work from there.

I think #54 would also agree with that.

The Tampa 2 is complete shit. Just give me 2 great ends, a 1 tech, some great safeties and a LB that can drop back or play the run....and any plan works if you give a d coach 6 top players!

I said many times in Beras chat last season that I would love to have younger versions of Traylor and Washington right now.

This sounds a lot like LoHo's film study on radio.

What the hell is that? Sounds like something married men need when they are out with their wife and a hot chick walks by.

And here I thought all these years having strong peripheral vision was a requisite. Now I hear "Eye Discipline"? Is this not look at the navel and not the head? I don't know. Terminology from sports dweebs/pee-wee hockey dads can be confusing.
