Earlier when of course Bernsie read someone else's article about Kerr he said the author was performed thoughtful writing. What does that even mean? Shouldn't professional writers always put some thought into the job?

They should, but they don't. You read any Rick Telander lately?

The show is terrible.

Stop listening or at the very least jab your eardrums with pipe snake.

Just walked in and I heard dan with one of his private sources say they now have statiscal evidence that drafting more players results in better teams. Bill Bellechick has been doing this for years. Trade down, get picks, trade vets, get picks.

This is so plainly self-evident, you'd think Leery would have broken it.

"I was at the gas station as I was driving home after my show, Dan, because my car needs gas to run. Not all people know this about cars. So I went in to pay for my gas, and I thought, 'hey, I'll get a soda.' And then I was feeling really crazy, so I said to myself, 'oh, why not, I think I'll buy a lottery ticket.' Now this was dangerous, because I had to look around to make sure that no one was going to make this about race. You know how it is with black people and lottery tickets, Dan! But then I thought to myself, and I realized, 'hey, I have a good chance of winning with one Pick 3 ticket, but I'd have an even better chance if I bought two tickets.' And then I thought about how you did such a good job with Who's Your Guy on your show today, Dan. And then I thought about the draft, and I realized..."

did anyone else hear the crank call in to Who's Your Guy the other day asking about 5'7" Napoleon complex Dan Borestien. The content wasn't great but the execution was funny.

I heard it. The funniest part of it was that Bernsie read the intro & the name "Napoleon complex Dan Borestien", & then says "Wait, this has got to be a bit, right"? Gee...ya think?

Hardly a private source.

The problem with creating economic models (theories) is the avoidance of being either too broad or too narrow, and to apply a data sample that is relevant. The authors look only at first round draft picks and use the performance metrics of the number of starts and the number of pro bowl nominations. Thus creating their hypothesis of teams overpaying (overvaluing) high first round draft pics. But in this process they ignore whether the draft pick will get them closer to a championship and the anomaly of pro bowl nominations. Looking at the historical data of what player was selected in what position and then applying how many starts they had and how many pro bowls, fails to take into account the team's needs at that particular point in time. There are myriad circumstances for why a team has a competitive need to force them to move up in the draft, from contractual situations, to injury situations, to changes in coaching regimes, to age or performance, to a player having a questionable personal life.

The other problem that disrupts the validity of this model is looking at pro bowls as a indication of player value. There are pro bowlers who don't play on competitive teams and there are pro bowlers who are voted in year after year (i.e., Lance Briggs) and thus relying upon this nomination as a measurement has such a variance to render its value questionable.

There are other flaws with the model because it tries to avoid the obvious aspect of competitive influence. In the model the Charger/Giants deal that swapped Phillip Rivers and Eli Manning would credit the Chargers for the smart move, based upon Rivers having the same number of starts as Manning and more Pro Bowl appearances. But Manning has two rings, and thus while the Chargers were smart the bottom line is that the Giants are smarter, because its all about winning championships.

Bottom line: Teams have operated frugally (on the cheap) for many years and specifically in how they approach the draft. This economic model reflects what a guy like George Halas knew decades ago. Not only is the NFL structured to foster competitive parity but has fiscal limitations to prevent financial losses. Very little is done in secret thus it still comes down to the ability to evaluate football talent.

But Manning/Rivers is a tough deal to objectively assess because the whole trade was predicated on Character Guy Manning bitching out of playing for the team that was going to draft him.

Well, she only got into the Hawks during last year's Stanley Cup run whereas Bernstein hopped-on in 2010.
