Seeing Rodgers success I would think coaches would desire more gays on their team.

He doesn't understand how a black guy could be about keeping someone out of the NFL. Even though thats not what Dungy said.

"I wouldn't have taken him,'' Dungy told the Tampa Bay Times. “Not because I don't believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn't want to deal with all of it.

"It's not going to be totally smooth ... things will happen."

Dungy is allowed to have whatever stance he wants on sexuality. Religion, freedoms, belief systems, yada yada.

But this is a disappointing stance from the first African-American coach to win a Super Bowl who dealt with racially-based backlash for he and his family at times. Dungy literally wrote (the foreward of) the book pushing for "Equal Coaching Opportunity in the NFL."

B&B making Dungy look like a fool. Not too hard I guess.

Not wanting the distraction of a gay player on your team makes you a racist?!?!?!

Please explain how that makes him a RACIST.

I am in no way defending Dungy....but that doesn't make sense to me.

Ironically, bernstein is only the champion of gay players when it comes to men's sports leagues. Gay players in women's sports leagues are denigrated as "wildebeests".

Are you saying that Dan Bernstein finds gay male athletes attractive?

I agree with Dan that Dungy is wrong and the reason he gives seems odd.

Sleeping on a bed of money and claiming that neither you nor anyone else remembers what was previously said goes a long way towards alleviating that.

of course it is

That same excuse could be and has been used as pretext to keep the "first" of any kind out of anything.

The only acceptable answer is to not draft him because he is not good enough at football.

Isn't what Tony Dungy said basically the same thing that Jim Miller said? Didn't Deadspin rip Miller and then Bernstein jumped to his aid?

Nice call. Here it is. Jim Miller hates gays, too.

A few thoughts on bernstein and his views on baseball.

First, it's difficult for he and Terry to have a discussion about the game because respective their thoughts on it are so far apart. Terry mentions a guy's batting average and I can hear dan rolling his eyes. For dan, batting average is mainly a function of luck and has no bearing on whether a guy is "good at baseball".

That leads me to my next point which is illustrated by bernstein's thoughts on Connor Gillaspie. dan decides who is "good at baseball" and who isn't based upon what he reads on Fangraphs or Baseball Prospectus. Or perhaps by who Theo drafts. And once that decision has been made on a guy's ability to play baseball, his performance is incidental. He admitted as much to a caller just now. dan has decided Baez is good. So even his ineptitude in AAA isn't evidence to the contrary. On the other hand, similar ineptitude by a Matt Davidson clearly shows he is "bad at baseball".

Finally, he has repeated his mantra "ALL. THAT. MATTERS. IS. WINNING. CHAMPIONSHIPS." so much that many of his listeners have come to believe such foolishness to the same degree that he does. For people who actually follow a team, watch most of the games, and yeah, pay to get into the park more than a time or two each season, there is a vast difference between a .500 team and one that loses 99 games. If all that matters is winning championships is really true, the Cubs haven't mattered in 104 years. I don't think bernstein really believes that. You're not going to win a championship every year. Not even if you're the Yankees. Winning 80 games is better than winning 75 which is better than winning 60. Only someone who doesn't really give a shit would suggest otherwise.

Just unbelievable Stacey King says Thib plays his players too many minutes  So they now think he's got to use his bench......but as CBA Dan says that won't work in the playoffs ...NO SHIT...starters that are fresh in the playoffs are better than players that are run into the ground

We may have heard the same caller and drove me nuts. I was on lawn tractor and could not post. Nice enough older guy and to their credit they let the I am long time season ticket watch every game thing go. But it cam to Gillaspie Dan was an idiot. Guy said is is good and a piece of course Dan says no. He has no reason other than power. Guy tells Dan go to your numbers. This guys was good. He said tell me the better third basemen in baseball by the numbers. Dan deflected and went he is just bad or not as good as you need.

My first thought are fine most think 1B and 3B are power positions but if you get other power you can deal with a 300 on base machine there. I am not making direct comparison but anyone recall the hits king for the decade Mark Grace?

Then there was the caller who attended a wedding with bernstein's parents. That inoculated him from being deemed an idiot right off the bat. The guy made a good point they couldn't understand. Your lineup is eight guys (9 in the AL). He was comparing the Sox and the Cubs. He suggested that the Sox's heavy prospect was already playing. It would be a longshot for Bryant to be as good as Abreu. If he is, Theo did great with that pick. Terry wanted to focus on Abreu's age. His age is meaningless unless you're dreaming about winning in 2024. I assume the Cubs think Bryant will be on a contender within the next four seasons. So figure Abreu is going to be 35 or so within that time frame. Over the next four or five years they can be viewed on level terms. dan worked his way out of it by calling Abreu a "magic unicorn".

Spot on and as far as the wedding Dan threw in that it was a big shooter wedding so if he was there.... Instant respect.

all the comparisons to jackie robinson and michael vick are making my head spin. and that bernsie is blindly agreeing is absurd as a sports "journalist". that article has "..."'s all over it so there has to be more context to this.

jackie robinson, even dungy himself were known commodities when people dealt with the distraction. he didn't coach michael vick. its either work with michael vick or collect sea shells by the sea shore. he's not dealing with vick AND the other duties of being a head coach.

stop bringing up hof caliber guys, or even guys who had much success at professional levels when comparing a 7th round probably cut/bench player.

The comparison is not the players. The comparison is "the distraction"
