what? have you watched jimmy clausen this year? does the caleb hanie era ring a bell? how about those headlines in the early early 90s like DOES PT STAND FOR PLAYING TIME? dude i'd rather have an overpaid mediocre quarterback with equal parts flashes of brilliance and WTF than have the chad hutchinson era redux
Which gets you an era of teams that hover around .500. There is a decent chance that at the end of this season the record of Cutler will be exactly .500. It may end up being a game or two over if things all break right.

For as much as we've complained about the Grossman/Orton era, it has a much higher winning percentage.

In the NFL, this is what you want:
1) Elite QB, regardless of how much they are paid.
2) Cheap, young, and pretty good to great QB.

That describes most of the best teams that are more than a 1 year flash in the pan.

There is a third more distant option.
3) Veteran moderately priced qb who can do just enough to let others make a big difference. Carson Palmer is a good example here.

Pay Cutler half of what he makes and you take him and can do well. Right now, not so much.

didn't he basically do that in 2013? i remember he came in during the redskins game and played about as good as you can expect someone to play (let alone a backup) and they still lost that gam.... then having brandon marshall and alshon jeffery out there = the drums were beating to keep him around and ppl were outraged when cutler came back...... or was that just a drug-induced daydream i had and we've never seen a run of good mccown b4?

clearly he should have lit it up in 2014 wherever he was, eh?

No but he did play better in that offense than Cutler ever has anywhere at anytime.

Lovie Smith couldn't hire an effective OC in Chicago. Do you think he had one last year in Tampa? And that's saying nothing of the offensive line in Tampa last year.

You put McCown in a system with adequate pass protection and some receivers to throw to and, Voila, you see big numbers passing.

well its my fault for going to the cutler angle, but still i just think it's a bit quick to anoint mccown as deserving of en masse apologies cuz he's had a great 3-4 game run or whatever. if he can go and win a playoff game or two with the browns and come out next year and do it again then i think you start talking apologies.

in soccer they'd call this a "purple patch" and i mean, shit, how's the harry kane experience working out for you in 15-16 thus far? and he did it for a whole season.... and i think mccown is capable of having those, sure, but even some of his ppl here acknowledge that he benefits from being in the right system with the right weapons at the right time.

it's just odd that he was pretty much shit for all of 2014 and now that he's had 3-4 good games in 2015 we disregard all of that and have to start apologizing for being wrong about him.

and of course all of these things don't matter when we talk about "coach killer" jay cutler. or if we start saying that jay cutler neds all this stuff (system/weapons/coaching) it's evidence of his craptitude.

yes i know jay cutler is supposed to be much much better than josh mccown, but then we might as well institute a formal caste system in football for when we start talking about if players are "good" or "bad" cuz what's good for the goose is a total indictment of the gander.

The thread title was written "tongue in cheek". It was about B&B being wrong after beating up on a guy for no reason, who only did well in Chicago. I just enjoy them having to eat their words, because B&B come across as such self-righteous pricks.

Hypothetical Jay Cutler is one of the top 5 qbs in the league!

that could be a proper board mult, but yeah sure i cant deny at one point when we got him in here we all hoped he'd be that....

but look man, i'll tell you this.... i still think having watched him for years and seeing what he can do when he has dusty's horses around him and some proper coaching, man, i wont say anything about his upside as top-whatever, but you can do a hell of a lot worse than jay cutler, and i think even you gotta admit that.... unless part of your bit is saying that claussen is just a little less than jay or something equally predictable =D

I explained why that isn't necessarily a good thing, but you are probably too busy to respond to it today.

McGowan has been good, but my 4 would be Brady, A-Rod, Dalton, Palmer.

I replied before I got to the next page. You do not deny that you generally have nothing good to say about Cutler no matter what the thread or subject is? Admit it you hate Cutler as the Bears QB and his contract and have for years.

It depends what the standard is. I agree that there are worse quarterbacks than Jay Cutler. He's a league average starting quarterback.

I wanted them to move on from Jay Cutler in the offseason, and the last contract extenstion they gave him was stupid but that is proving to be pretty correct.

I love beating on Bernstein but this thread here sucks.
