I can imagine it. Craig Karmazin is enough of a radio geek to scoop up Bernstein (especially at a steep, threatened-a-civilian discount).

I hope he gets another job soon, and I would be glad to be wrong.

I just can't see this happening.

I'd listen to Hood and Bernstein in the mornings.

This is pretty much it here.

There is less and less talent in the industry and there is absolutely no talent at The Score now. Larry , as a 30 year lifer on the payroll, should only be doing overnights where he can stroke it to superhero talk for 4 hours because absolutely no one is listening. Spiegel should be doing his baseball show on the weekends and filling in for vacationing talent...sparingly. There is just no talent at all at the station. Condense your crap into a few shows and run something national for the other half of the day.

I haven't listened to the score in years with any type of regularity. It doesn't help that the teams in this town are dog shit year round most of the time. How many years ago did Dan stop taking calls on his show? Or was he still and it just never mentioned on this site?

Across all of his shows post Terry he would take maybe 4 a week, but only the ones he wanted.

I haven't been a listener in several years. Just too many good podcasts to listen to plus Chicago sports kinda sucks as does baseball and basketball. Boers and Bernstein will always be my favorite show if we can overlook the PSU obsession. McNeil, Spiegs, Parkins- it's been fun as well. RIP the Score!

What I learned over the years is that a lot of people wander around not knowing how to feel about stuff, thus Bernstein persisting for at least 10 years beyond his use-by date. I do worry about these folks, as it will be hard to know what to do the next time a big sports/political story breaks ... maybe DiCaro can hire him on to her pay-to-read newsletter? I'm sure the Dan Defenders would be happy to shell over money each month for his emotional guidance on life.

It's so much more complicated than say, in 1980 when all it took was a "It's morning in America" commercial. Back then, it took a huge commitment to be savvy about the goings on in the world. Now it's in your pocket and you can look up any damn thing any time. It's both a blessing and a curse.

It was after the move to middays that I really noticed open phone lines starting to go away for everything but Bears Mondays. If not then, definitely by the pandemic after McDoink got laid off and Dan went solo for a while.

The Meatball Machine is their attempt to recapture the magic of callers while not making them sit on hold (yes, radio has successfully innovated...leaving voicemail), but it's not the same. I saw a few weeks ago they tried to do a Friday Fung through voicemail. I mean, kudos for at least trying to bring back a classic segment, but wasn't the magic of Friday Fung always in the back-and-forth, questioning the absurdity of people's anecdotes? Oh well. I think by the end of the season, even Bears Mondays were all just by voicemail.

Twitter killed the calls. Was just easier and lazy to read tweets that they could curate.

I remember a Friday Fung from 2007 or 2008 where they did Sports Apologies. Someone called in doing Buckwheat voice and went like "hah! dis be Cawmewo Ampony--" and Dan just went "NO" and cut him off right there. This has sat dormant in my brain for years and pops back up whenever I think of Friday Fung. That and The Jim Nantz Sports Time Machine, of course.

My personal favorite "caller goes too far" Friday Fung moment was a Fred Huebner impression contest where the caller went "Mmm hmm hmm, I lost my wedding ring, in Jeff Garcia's RECTUM!"

The Fred Huebner Soundalike Contest is either on youtube or was posted here because I remember Whitley In Ravenswood doing Fred's English soccer fandom and talking about Turdlington Cup ACTION!

Oh, I found a whole tranche of 2006-2011 Score audio on my external drive and this one is there. I should get to uploading, huh.

EDIT: I just got to the rectum clip. "Gaylord on a car phone" gets the line off and then gets hung up with a "get outta here."

The social media platform they can't even call by it's actual name is what they depend on for most of their content.
