I agree with the idea that Bernstein's hypersensitivity to "racism" in relatively trivial matters is inversely proportional to the race and class prejudice he evinces when discussing matters of larger or systemic importance.

Don't you hold the belief that racism is just a convention of the elite to hide classism?

No.

Oh really? Was I listening to my "imaginary radio" when they called a voodoo princess, and had her put a curse on Kurt Warner because he dared to invoke the name of God?

What about the various jokes slamming Mike Singletary because he had the audacity to wear a crucifix? There are plenty of things to rip Singletary for without going there.

As usual, I think Terry just follows along with him, but I do think Dan has some weird dislike of people of faith. Beardown is a fucking idiot, but I see his point when he talks about the friction between Abbatacola and Bernstein. Matt is even on record here as admitting Dan doesn't respect him.

Agreed. Evangelization of Christianity drives them like no other topic.

To elaborate on my response above, I believe that racism can be a tool that serves the interests of class power, but I do not believe that it can be defined exclusively as such.

You probably know this, but part of the reason Bernstein suffers from "angst" related to Christianity is that he lost his DePaul gig due to complaints about his treatment of the Catholic Church's molestation scandal.

Ive always questioned the validity of that claim.

I mean, how do we know THAT is why they fired him?'

Doesn't seem like a stretch to me. I'll take Bernstein's word on that one, especially since he was/is extremely gifted as a play-by-play announcer. He can accurately and compellingly describe the running of tons of stuff like few others.

Because Dan told us so. :D

It seems his specific qualm is with the hyping up of "good" catholics, like Dolphin said.

Hard to blame that feeling with all the priest scandals. But he applies it too often.

Well, he clearly has a problem with the aggressiveness with which Christian fundamentalists express their beliefs. The problem is that he often seems to conflate Christian fundamentalism with Christianity, just as he uses evidence of a culture of deviance within the hierarchy of the Catholic Church to dismiss the broader culture and doctrines of Catholic teachings.

Many here often do the same thing when religious topics are discussed.

And in the next breath, he is making fun of the people who do that with Islamic Fundamentalists

I just think that Bernstein hates racially divisive talk. It doesn't do any good to disparage a group with ignorance. It's magnified in the NBA because there are no white people worth anything and acquiring them should be avoided at all costs and the fans of Oklahoma City are basically holding a Klan rally by wearing the same colored shirts and standing until the first basket is made.

Is there a word that describes a racist who decries racism? That pretty much describes both Bernstein and Goff. Weirdos who only believe they should be allowed to be racist. Maybe it's some psychological disorder. Serious question. Tall Midget, you seem like your well versed on this subject. Got an answer?
