Quote:
Last week, Lake Mead, which sits on the border of Nevada and Arizona, set a new record low—the first time since the construction of the Hoover Dam in the 1930s that the lake’s surface has dipped below 1,080 feet above sea level. The West’s drought is so bad that official plans for water rationing have now begun—with Arizona’s farmers first on the chopping block. Yes, despite the drought’s epicenter in California, it’s Arizona that will bear the brunt of the West’s epic dry spell.

The huge Lake Mead—which used to be the nation’s largest reservoir—serves as the main water storage facility on the Colorado River. Amid one of the worst droughts in millennia, record lows at Lake Mead are becoming an annual event—last year’s low was 7 feet higher than this year’s expected June nadir, 1,073 feet.

If, come Jan. 1, Lake Mead’s level is below 1,075 feet, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which manages the river, will declare an official shortage for the first time ever—setting into motion a series of already agreed-upon mandatory cuts in water outlays, primarily to Arizona. (Nevada and Mexico will also receive smaller cuts.) The latest forecasts give a 33 percent chance of this happening. There’s a greater than 75 percent chance of the same scenario on Jan. 1, 2017. Barring a sudden unexpected end to the drought, official shortage conditions are likely for the indefinite future.

Quote:
According to Dan Bunk of the Bureau of Reclamation’s Colorado River operations office, the current projections, factoring in both the ongoing drought and the systemic overallocation, are “almost guaranteeing a shortage in 2017.” Engineers are already installing new hydropower electricity-generating equipment at Lake Mead to prepare for the contingency of the lake reaching so-called “dead pool” levels—below which the Colorado River will no longer be able to spin Hoover’s power-generating turbines. A new intake from Lake Mead to Las Vegas will come online later this year, allowing the city to essentially suck the lake dry, all the way down to the last drop.

Quote:
Among the other options officially on the table in the state of Arizona: desalination and cloud seeding.

WE'RE CLOUDBUSTING, DADDY!!!

God we so fucked up.

Arizona doesn't even have the (incredibly expensive) option of desalinization. Its over, good bye forever shit state.

Yeah, desalination will bail California out eventually, but have fun getting that water inland and uphill. The question now is where do we put the Scumbag Containment Zone for displaced Arizonans who themselves are displaced Midwesterners? How about South Carolina?

South Carolina is too pretty and nice, they shouldn't be rewarded for their foolishness. Not to mention the substantial risk of breeding Arizonan brand of right wing racism with old school South Carolinian racism. Dont want to chance it.

I say stick them in Barstow so they can have their desert. Let them fight with Los Angelinos just outside the desalinization plant under a trickling pipe and PPV that shit.

Lake Michigan sitting at historic high levels.

The next civil war will be the Great Lakes states breaking away to form its own country.

Gonna say I have spent more time in the state than the combined time of the critics ....got no problem with the fine people of Phoenixdale area. couldnt be nicer. Even the grumpy old Cowboys are good people once they put their guns down.

So we built a pipeline for oil....so....that was 1000 miles? OK

Run one from the Mississippi River into the Co river...or from WA to CA? And NV and AZ would be fine.

Dont think any REAL solutions have been enacted, only BS ones like...dont water your lawn...or dont flush....How about....no growing hay to ship to China?

I've spent a lot of time in Arizona and the whole state is a wasteland except for Flagstaff/Sedona and the canyon. Prescott and Camp Verde are OK. Phoenix/Tucson are horrible though, and the people there know it. Except for the college students who are too fucked up to care everyone is constantly complaining. Of the Arizonans I've met the ones actually worth talking to all loathe the place and either spend every second they can in the northern portion of the state or sulk.

We are not building a pipeline from the Great Lakes down to Arizona. No, do not just drain the largest natural resource of the country to keep cities that shouldn't even exist afloat.

Draining one of our most prized and vitally important natural resources so people can continue to live in a desert is a really, really, really, really terrible idea. Like one of the worst things you can come up with. Ever.

Fresh water is as important as oil and fossil fuels.

I think SomeGuy has a good idea with the new Great Lakes country., we can co-opt the Quebecois independence movement to gain ocean access too. Ontario will get their share of the water but other than that its all for us.

That may be true currently but I recall Lake Michigan being at an historic low just a couple of years ago. It's a tenuous situation at best.

Indeed.

Thus the situation demands you protect it.

One thing I would kind of like to see Chicago do is allow more treated (<- important) waste water to get back into the lake rather than pumping it endlessly down the Chicago River and S&S Canal. Even though the Lake evaporates more water on a day in July than Chicago uses in a year, its just a nice gesture.

The real solution is not to live in a desert. Maybe Las Vegas just can't sustain as many as two-and-a-quarter million people on account of it being in the middle of a fucking desert. I'm not saying evacuate the premises entirely, but there has to be some sort of market correction here.

But yeah, agriculture is going to get hit very hard. That's going to hurt California so much.
