That is not the point I was making. I gave a long list of reasons why Bernstein lives a good life.

Money is one of them.

Also, and I may be slightly off, but wasn't it with IMU that money solves depression?

Well in a very basic sense, lack of money seems to be a source for a lot of struggle in peoples lives so money not being an issue certainly eliminates one of the biggest sources of unhappiness.

Of course. All things being equal it's sure better to have money than not to. But it should also be clear to most intelligent people that money and happiness to not have anything close to a directly proportionate relationship.

How did I celebrate brick? I said he made some good points.

So IMU had some good points too then when he said people with money shouldn't be depressed? It's one or the other.

Here is an example of the points I was referring to. I see nothing simliar to what IMU is saying.

20 hour weeks, talking sports, making huge money, living in the second best city in the world, a limitless supply of unlabeled wine, being the face of a charitable organization, and being chummy with some of the other Chicago elite sounds like a pretty good life to me.

It's not the same thing though. I'm not saying that Bernstein is happy because he makes lots of money. I'm saying he lives a good life and one of those things is a high paying job.

If IMU simply said that making a lot of money is better than making less money he'd have a good point. Unfortunately he said that money is the cure for depression, or something similar to that. That isn't true.

Yes, but what you are saying is literally almost the exact same thing. IMU is saying money = you shouldn't be depressed. You are saying money = you should be happy. Maybe you didn't mean it to come out that way, but that was the exact sentiment you expressed over several posts in this thread.

If we are using this as a reference guide, there are probably dozens of people on this board who are happier and more fulfilled than Dan Bernstein is.

I can't imagine Brick was being serious in this thread. If he was, that's pretty bad.

It was a direct question I answered.

I have no problem saying that making Dan Bernstein type money is one sign that you are living a good life.

Judging by your response, money seems to be the sole criteria there.

Except I made it clear that it was one of many, as RFDC has pointed out.

Just admit you only read a few posts. It's ok.

Its not even the money. Being Dan Bernstein means you can sleep in til 11:00 every morning before a 6 mile commute that skips rush hour completely. And the job is just bullshitting about sports and reading some blog posts you like. Occasionally you branch out to pop culture or some local story. Do that for 5 hours a day then go home. Vacation time when you want it/need it. You can half ass literally everything and have obscene amounts of spare time.

The $400k a year is just gravy.

I read the entire thread before responding. Your entire point in this thread centered around happiness being equated with income and social status. It's impossible to reach any other conclusion. This quote, if not a bit or said facetiously, is the exact same thing IMU would get killed for if he posted it:

Quote:
20 hour weeks, talking sports, making huge money, living in the second best city in the world, a limitless supply of unlabeled wine, being the face of a charitable organization, and being chummy with some of the other Chicago elite sounds like a pretty good life to me

It's saying income, perceived easiness of your job, and social status are primarily what make up a good life. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Just admit you were doing a bit here and move on. No big deal.

That is not the only conclusion you can reach on what he has said here.

Just let it go man. You do not have a better understanding of Bricks point than Brick does.

Of course I do. I just made my entire case, and you couldn't make a counterpoint to any of it.

Hey, you know that pyramid you posted? If you include his charitable work, which I talked about but you omitted, those things hit every single level.

He also seems to have a pretty good family life too.

I guess I'm missing all the things that are missing in his life. You can fill me in. No one has a perfect life but he seems to hit a lot of the things that most people want.

You said it was impossible to come to any other conclusion than yours.

I came to a different conclusion.

You are wrong.

Easy enough.

I just want to point out that like King Benny said in Sleepers, Bernstein makes good money but he don't make real money. He's comfortable. He's not comfortable enough to not have to suck up to his corporate overlords.

No, I can't, because I have no idea what his personal feelings about his life are, how his relationships are, where his confidence level is at, if he believes he has reached his potential, if he finds meaning and purpose in his life, etc. You have no idea either, which is why you were wrong in this thread. Are you seriously sticking to the idea that all but six people on this board would definitely switch lives with Bernsie?

You didn't come to any conclusions. That requires thought being put in. Like B Mac with politics, when you see a Bernsie thread, we all automatically know what your position is. No need to state it.

Its cool. Brick and I know the score.

His wife working that job speaks volumes about their perceptions of their security.

Not many people can feel secure with a 500K+ balloon payment staring them in the face. You heard the concern the other day when Dan talked about what it takes to get into elite colleges, then he threw out high schools as well. It's difficult to get into a Chicago magnet and he isn't sending his kids to regular track CPS for HS.

So now you have gone to the "I don't know and you don't know" defense?

Obviously I'm doing some amount of speculation. He may have the worst life in the entire country. I can only make my most educated guess based on the available evidence. You have to acknowledge that he is setup pretty well for happiness given all the things I've mentioned.

Oh, and just for fun.
Self-actualisation: Purpose from his family life, his charitable efforts, and creativity from a successful media show
Self-esteem needs: Confidence from well everything, achievements from work and charitable success
Love and belongingness: Friendship from his big group that likes him and the report that at the bar on Friday that he was hugging it out with people all over the place
Safety and Security Needs: MONEY(sorry, I hope it is ok to mention it when relevant)
Physiological needs: Air, food, water, shelter, clothing: MONEY, sleep from 20 hour work week!

Bernstein is happy overall. Great schedule, good pay, great family etc.

However, he hates his job. No question the arrangement is great (again, pay/schedule). But given his Duke education and circles he's been invovled with I believe he's disappointed.

But his grading curve is higher than many so there's that.

Let me state that I'm not saying he is rich. He's doing better than almost everyone. $400k a year puts you in the 1%, and he is probably above $400k though.

Not salaried. I imagine the income varies widely but she is not officed in a neighborhood where parents are plunking down huge cash. That's the golden goose of wedding planning: parents who derive validation from their child's wedding reception.

 Have you been following the thread? I never claimed to know any of those things about Bernsie. The only point I made was that you don't know, so therefore you have no idea how happy he actually is.

Quote:

Bernsie doesn't come off as very confident, IMO. He comes off as pretty insecure. But that is speculation, and equally as invalid as your assessment.

It seems that you are making the obvious mistake of looking at external appearances and assuming that tells the whole story. I would think you would know better than that, which is why many assumed this had to be a bit.
