Imagine if you worked in radio for years and clawed all the way up the ranks to the top and hosted your own show that dominated ratings for over a decade. Then your partner retires, and you probably choose his replacement but that sputters out. Now you have to do pathetic iterations of the show you used to have, but with waves of increasingly shittier talent. You hum along, knowing your cohosts are stupid and boring but you give it the old college try, stuck in an elevator with two people you’d rather not talk to but you have to. You are constantly thinking about the other ways your life could have gone, but here you are in your late fifties, stuck in a box with two cohosts who try to talk like 20-something’s despite being forty. You know you have wasted precious time, but at least you can go fishing. Unfortunately for you, you decided to demonize the majority of the demographic that goes fishing(evil white guys). Now your recreational outlet is socially compromised, and as soon as you realize that, you realize everything you thought you were building was actually a trap. There is nowhere left to run, you’ve built your own tomb.

It also strikes me as odd that Bernstein and McNeil both loved fishing on the order of their firstborn sons, but could never find a shred of common ground.

Mac was still there when video was available, I remember seeing a video stream of transition where bernstein alluded to the perceived beef between he and Mac and they both threw up their shoulders as if to say there wasn't anything to it. That might have been for show but mac never seemed to care about what camera was which. Small sample size but it seemed genuine.
