You have to take bernstein's article in the context of what has come before. He didn't write it in a vacuum.

For example, Don Tiny and I got chippy with each last night. If I had said, "Fuck you, Don Tiny, if I ever see you I'm going to kill you.", I don't think he would have considered that a serious threat. And it wouldn't have been. It would just be another angry pantsless cretin popping off on a message board. However, if Drew Peterson said the same thing to him in a heated conversation, the Don should probably get himself a gun.

This whole "Callers are idiots" thing is just the way they want to play it. Admittedly, sometimes it's funny to hear bernstein take a guy apart. But they don't want intelligent sports calls either. One more thing about the postgame shows. bernstein's narrative is that Sox and Bears fans are rabid and maniacal morons that call in to drunkenly bitch. Cub fans are being taught by Theo to be smarter than that.

Let's take Rongey for a minute and imagine he was handling the Bears show after they started this season 0-2. He might open the show with something like this:

"Well, another tough loss, but there was a huge improvement from last week against the Colts. Cutler only threw two interceptions this week and the O-line was appreciably better. The PAckers are a favorite to go to the Super Bowl and they only beat the Bears by seven. All in all, a lot positive to take away from this game."

That's the bait that sets up the bash.

Because now, We've got Caller Bob from Huntley saying that the season is over and all the other teams in the division are 2-0 and Cutler still sucks and Rongey mocking him in measured tones and talking about how every team has holes. No fan wants to hear that after a tough loss. We're fans. That's short for fanatic. These losses are emotional.

I'm not saying there isn't room for a voice of reason. But don't tell me who fucking good Thornton's WHIP is compared to the league average for guys who mainly pitch the seventh inning on three days rest after he's just blown a four run lead by walking three guys and giving up a homer. It doesn't really matter if it's true or not. It's not just a voice of reason, it's Rongey trying to argue with the fans.

When the Bears start 0-2, O'Bradovich will open something like this:

"THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE, DOUGIE! I'm getting a little tired of all the excuses Cutler has. They went out and got him all the weapons he wanted, got him his own coach, sooner or later, this kid is gonna have to step up and win a big game against Green Bay."

It really doesn't matter at this point if Cutler has won several "big games" vs. the Packers. This is how the Bear fan feels. And O'B and Doug have now created an environment for commiseration and shared experience. It's just a different approach. I'm sure bernstein considers Doug and O'B meatballish idiots. But they're really just fans. Something bernstein has difficulty understanding.
