I'd be willing to buy that if I trusted the accounting of university athletic departments, which I don't. How much Alabama football revenue goes into academics, and how much goes into the murky slush fund that buys more football players?

Probably not much, but so what? Money doesn't come out of academics, either. The athletic department funds itself, as it should be.

Athletic departments normally don't cut big checks to the University, but in some cases they give back a few million of television contracts.

It's not just football revenue that matters though. It's donations and exposure. Think about the advertising dollars they get for being a national story for a month and a half. Think about all the people that show up to campus 7 or 8 times a year that would otherwise not go for years. Think about how Alabama football allows for other sports no one cares about to exist.

If Alabama decided to pay a coach $1 million dollars a year they'd easily lose $10+ million a year in ticket sales alone.

For the record, Alabama had a football profit of $45 million. The average football program bought in $25 million.

That is how it should be, but then you can't argue that coaches making seven figures are worth every penny because the money that good football makes brings down everyone's tuition.

I thought I heard Dan ask why NFL teams aren't looking at Petrino. So I did. Um, yeah, turns out the whole "quit your job mid-season to go to the SEC" thing doesn't work when you're in the NFL. He'll never work in that league again.

It does though. I have tried to explain how a few times to you before but you refuse to acknowledge it. Here is a hint. Not all donations are made to the athletic department. There is a reason that Michigan State gets significantly more in donations than Illinois State.

Playing for a National Championship and having a #1 recruiting class does mean Notre Dame can compete with the big boys despite what B&B are preaching.

I work at Pitt. While their football and bball aren't top shelf they are somewhat respectable. What was said is exactly right. The athletics in general are supported by football and bbal. Furthermore, exposure and making alumni and boosters happy is key. Money flows big time in donations University wide. The almighty endowment is the key. There is a reason the football coach makes 4x more than the chancellor. It's good business or it wouldn't happen. So while you may not be able to prove that tuition is down due to football the overall institution's health is way up in general.

1.) Does Dan seriously think that Emery is "learning about football" through all these interviews?

2.) If so, how can he place so much faith in a guy who apparently needs Marc Trestman the way Dan needs Matt Bowen?

3.) In the context of NFL coaching, what are "state secrets"? Assuming that they exist, why would prospective head coaches be spilling them to Phil Emery in a first interview? Why would Phil Emery, as opposed to the eight other GMs who have conducted or are conducting head-coaching searches, benefit from this secret knowledge? Most critically, can anyone possibly be daft enough to believe that the sharing of such secrets is "pissing off a lot of people around the league"?
