This doesn't sound good at all. Not one bit.

Here is the text of Boers’ message to colleagues:

Due to some unforeseen circumstances, my recovery is indeed going much slower than I had hoped or expected. It sounds silly, but the fact that I’ve been unable to do the show in so long hurts way more than any of the medical stuff that’s been happening. I have an ache in my heart that somehow requires being a goofball on the air for a minimum of five hours per day. End of story.

I can’t explain it either, and the doctors and nurses are at a loss. When I mention how important it is for me to get back to work, they seem frustrated by me being such a cement head, but they have come to expect it. At least those who know what I do.

I should note here how eternally grateful I am to all those who have reached out to me in this difficult time. I really didn’t think that doing a sports-talk show was all that important in the grander scale of things and I’m happy to have been so wrong.

Looking ahead, my timetable seemingly gets pushed back every other day. Right now, I am looking to return to the airwaves in the early part of October, which will give me plenty of time to soak the Cubs in even greater glory and have some time for Bears, whose coach will likely be crazier than any Fox by that time.

Here’s hoping to talk to you soon,

Terry Boers

The only thing I can guess at that would keep him off the air this long would be some sort of major throat surgery.

Close to the same thing John McLaughlin told PBS

Post-op infection? Could it have been cancer and they didn't get all the malignant cells? He said "doctors and nurses" so he's got to be receiving some kind of treatment regularly, that doesn't sound like physical therapy setbacks.

This sounds a single step from the press releases which come out a week before somebody dies. Staph infection, found some kind of cancer they weren't expecting, etc. Not good news at all.

fuck... this is a no-good. he didn't even get a chance to begin a rehab assignment at XRT before he had discomfort/setbacks/complications. personally, i was looking forward to a few days of an OPS over 1.000 in terms of "hitting the post" =D

obviously (in lieu of money) thoughts and prayers are going out to the guy who i've called "one of my radio heroes" over the years. godspeed you creepy old weird [schticky] bastage, you! and if terry can't get back to doing radio proper here's hoping that maybe he'd consider some sort of a blog or even a sporadic column somewhere cuz it's easy to forget that the dude can write. go figure that one of my "heroes" sure seems to love long sentences with aspirations of infinity, just like someone i know and loathe every morning in the mirror =P

Have not been able to listen much and seems all for the better with Terry gone. He is the only one who makes the show anyway. Best to him. Does not sound good.

There are a lot of things it could be. Unfortunately complications happen.

Hopefully he is back around soon. The show is not the same

No. I don't think it's cancer or anything serious like some of you are suggesting. He said it was elective surgery. So I'm just thinking complications from hip surgery. Hip surgery was my guess at the beginning. Maybe rehab isn't going well.

Or maybe Boers is milking his sick leave. Then he retires in January. I don't buy that he misses being on the air.

My Dad did the same thing. He got his knee and hip replaced right before he retired so he could use his company insurance and get paid for sick leave. That's what I think Boers is doing. Remember Boers had shoulder surgery a year or so ago. He's just getting all of his medical shit done on the SCORE dime before retirement. That's all.

yeah, i definitely gotta +1 you on this one. as i've said countless times in the past, ever since Dan became the FOTS ("face of the station" for any n00bs out there) it's like he evolved into thinking he ought to do something "important" with his platform, and thus we started to get REALLY. IMPORTANT. RADIO. that keyed us in on new and radical ideas such as "molesting children is bad."

for better or worse, i think that terry has always realized that getting paid (well into?) six figures to sit on the radio and partake in what phil jackson once referred to as "mental masturbation" is truly silly, superfluous, and ultimately absurd; therefore he tends to bring the levity more often than not. obviously that's hard to do when dan's on a roll standing on his soapbox (pushing the 5'8" barrier no doubt =) letting the masses know REALLY. IMPORTANT. STUFF. such as "long-term brain injuries are something you should try to avoid getting" - terry has the common sense to just rubberstamp all that with an "uh huh" as he's not going to do anything to mess up this gig because i think he's always had the self-awareness to realize how good he's got it at the score (especially when he's at home on the ISDN line)

but hey here's to hoping that he makes a full recovery at some point and he's able to get on that ISDN line more often than not. i told myself that i should go out of my way to schedule some "appointment radio" while terry's still there, this is going to make me double my efforts like the guys building the death star when they found out the emperor was coming.

We've all listened to Boers for years. You know his way. He's a guarded and private guy.

He wouldn't release a statement about coming back if he was near death like some of you are suggesting. He'd say nothing if that were the case.

Trust me. I'm the best at reading people as you all know. It's a gift.

Although I will say this, sources have told me that Barry Rozner snuck into Terry's hospital room with a pillow in hand upon reading Terry's statement. A nurse entered the room before he could do it so the plot was thwarted...so I'm told.

Plus I'm told Boers was awake anyway much to Barry's chagrin.

Terry: Eeeeee eeeeee. What are you doing here, Barry?

Barry: Nothing. Just thought you needed an extra pillow. This is a "My Pillow". I stole it from Spiegel.

Terry: Eeeeee eeeeee. Thanks buddy.
