I was as big of a Dan Bernstein fan as someone like Brick or Douchebag up until fall of 2015. Then the Kane story occurred and Bernstein along with DiCaro tried to railroad him and destroy his life. When we learned the truth, neither offered a word of contrition. That event birthed my hatred for them. Seeing them both fail since then has been glorious. It was those events that also introduced me to this board and Barstool.

You are right on lack of contrition. Not a peep of even my bad. That was the height of my disgust with B&B

Were they wrong? Sr. Editor Jules claims to "know stuff"....stuff that no one else knows. IIRC the accuser's family, the same family that planted evidence, was using Jules as a mouthpiece to control the narrative. Dan wanted it to be true so bad that he didn't see how his resident moron update reader was being played.

That was the end of the line for me as well. His time on Penn State was bad but I kind of justified that because it was crazy. When he went hard on the Kane stuff and was wrong it was pretty obvious that he was a gigantic piece of shit. As far I know he never walked anything back or apologized.
I know there isn’t much anyone can do or say but I get great pleasure in knowing that his name and legacy are fucked forever.

All because Dan was mad that 1) his kid and wife were enjoying hockey more than basketball at the time and 2) the Hawks had had the audacity to leave the Score for WGN when they got good. After years of Bernstein, North and others moaning on air about how having the Hawks kept them from airing the Bulls, U of I, DePaul, Westwood One national NFL or any other fucking thing at night instead.

He always deeply disliked the Hawks and their fans for whatever reason. When the Hawks lost to the Kings in 2014 he wrote a column that almost sounded like he was celebrating it. "There will be no rally in Grant Park this year, put away all those Hawks kiosks at every intersection."

And a large contingent of Hawk fans showed a disgusting part of their personality during the summer of 2015 as well. That made my decision to turn my back on the Hawks that much easier when the Beach news came out.

The Beach incident was also hilarious.

Hawks fans were 100% correct to react how they did. Hayley Pandolfi tried to extort Kane and failed.

You might have hit on something there with the wife and kid and hockey. It's a fun time but when your kid gets physically involved it changes things.
It can be hard to watch and I wonder if he and his wife and son were on the same page.

The Hawks got good at the same time that the Bulls got Derrick Rose and he never forgave them for it. That was supposed to be a new golden age of nerding out over basketball, but then the Bulls hired a complete dumbass to coach the team, Paxson never stopped trying to build a roster of infinite Kirk Hinrichs, and then all these dopey white-ethnics started calling in wanting to discuss the latest big win over the Edmonton Oilers.

You have touched on something I always suspected about Bernsie and hockey. He never learned it nor wanted to. He did crosswords at his kid’s games. He would not watch the Hawks and definitely no out of town hockey.

Hockey didn’t have metrics for him to cheat at to look smart. As in baseball I doubt he watched any non Cub baseball for a long time relying only on metrics to discuss.

Relying on wor rather the sight was right up his alley.

The thing is there are metrics in hockey that can make you appear smart. The Hawks were actually one of the most dominant team in those metrics too (unsurprisingly). Bernstein just never bothered to learn them because he couldn't stomach Derrick Rose getting overshadowed by the likes of Patrick Kane.

Correct, he over-simplified hockey down to puck-luck when an 8 seed beat a 1 seed in the playoffs.

It does not take long for a new consumer of NHL hockey to learn the difference between regular season hockey and playoff hockey. See the 2017 Blackhawks.
Bernstein didn't like hockey...good for him. If his son's hockey involvement couldn't bring him in as a fan, that's a damn shame and his own loss.

I think Dan made up his mind long ago that for all shakes's best efforts, hockey was irretrievably goy-coded and he wasn't going to dirty his hands with it. Obviously he'd never come out and say it, but I always thought there were deep cultural reasons why he found hockey's violence unacceptable but football's violence totally cool and fun.

Perhaps. I simply thought it was NHL whitey bad, NBA is good. Maybe it is more complex I really do not know his mind. You can answer better than anyone that there seems to be some sort of Brooklyn connection that predisposes many Jews to like basketball.

They were a huge force in the game in the 40s and 50s...not just as owners, but as players, too.

When Bernstein picked on hockey, he chose to do it for the same reasons he picked on everyone else: because he either thought he could get away with it or he saw himself as a self-righteous leader.

The guy is an occasionally funny, whiny little suburbanite. He's *not* complex. Mac is complex.
