He knows nothing about soccer, but now acts like he's scooping this story. "Euro soccer racism shocking" is the title. Umm, no. It's not shocking at all. It's well known. It's been the main focal point throughout the tournament.

For a guy that acts like a know it all and talks down to anyone he thinks isn't informed, he should stay away from the subject.
-He compares it to sports in the USA and what would happen to a fan in the stands if they directed a racist chant towards a player. Yeah, completely offbase comparison and different culture. The people directing the fans likely have a well built reputation (in a bad way) and may kill you if you try and challenge or silence them. Let's not act like racism doesn't exist here and hasn't happened before (multiple NBA incidents). There's a lot of other sports and life situations in Europe. I think it's sad that guys like Bernstein (and an idiot on my facebook feed who posted the article who agreed with it because he hates soccer) use a serious topic as an excuse to rag on soccer just because you don't like the sport
-Using a select few to generalize a fanbase, a country, a continent, etc. Well done. It's not the whole stadium doing these things. And the way it's being covered by media right now, it's basically a witchhunt where journalists look out for any peep of racism and then get an erection once they find something. Yep, there's racists in Europe. This idea that you'll change the way everyone thinks is laughable, unless you kidnap and brainwash all of civilization.
- Speaking of that media, Danny quotes some English rags as the source of his information. Since we're comparing to the US, those are about as good as US tabloids
- But my favorite part of this whole thing. I stopped listening to this show years ago after I got sick of my religion being the focal point of jokes and serious things being discussed in poor taste. Things change when it's Danny's religion. There's been a ton of racism abroad but now it's worthy to comment on since one of the alleged chants was anti-semetic huh Danny??

There are a lot of good soccer journalists out there. They actually go in the environments being talked about, and know a little bit of the complicated history and culture surrounding the issue. If you don't want to like the sport, fine, but then don't get up on your high horse and talk about something you know nothing about.

btw, if this is so important to danny, then he should tackle his own city first. i've been subjected to plenty of similar racism on the streets of chicago just for being a white boy. maybe danny should stand an entire day somewhere south of pershing and see if this is a soccer/european issue (especially since he came off just as badly to the ukranians and polish). see if anyone comes to his rescue like he talks about in his example/comparison, and then he can start getting his information before trying to attack soccer and soccer fans.

Bernstein's problem is that he feels as if every issue that transcends sports requires his opinion, when there's nothing further from the truth.

Now come on. "No, you misheard us, we weren't taunting the blacks, we were taunting the Jews" isn't exactly a "peep" of racism. Racism in Europe is a big deal and something that should be brought to light, because I don't think most people realize just how bad it is there. Most Americans think Europe is unimpeachably liberal and tolerant because they've heard people joke about getting high in Amsterdam. How quickly we forget that we're still dealing with a comparatively tiny little peninsula of peninsulas filled with dozens and dozens of peoples who have hated one another for centuries, with mere vacillations in transparency. People ought to know how poorly non-European immigrants are received in the Old World, and just how bad and how real European antisemitism has become, if we're supposing that at some semi-recent point it ever got better.

But he's not even good at it. The idea that sports is a metaphor for life, war, society at large, etc. and reflects greater truths far beyond the scores of the games is not a new one. In fact, the Baby Boomers have made such "serious" sports coverage an art form. Bryant Gumbel does a monthly show based on that concept (and I'm quite sure Thierry Henry discussed the "monkey chant" on that show several years ago). And whether you love or hate Rick Telander, his writing is at least occasionally poignant.

Part of bernstein's failing when he attempts such an approach is purely generational. His Generation X nihilism keeps getting in the way. A certain level of sincerity is necessary to pull off this type of analysis and anyone who listens from 1 to 6 each day is well aware that it's something danny is sorely lacking.

That's the same issue I have with his coverage of the Sandusky story. I know that deep down he feels for the kids that were abused, but his reflex (and the reflex of many of us of the same generation) is to deal with it through humor and irreverence. And on a story like that, it just doesn't come off too well.

And finally- and most importantly- sometimes sports is just sports.

DOES...NOT.......COMPUTE...

Like I said here, Dan and the show as a whole is trying to amalgamate these conflicting styles and force the issue. It's not made for very good radio at all.

Remember B & B middays? Seems like 30 years ago. Totally different show vibe back then.

I remember when the show used to be a lot of fun, but what makes it even sadder to listen now is that you can tell, especially with Terry, that the glint has faded and things have taken a strange turn.

It's one thing to hear how much more negative the subjects have gotten, but the tone is so goddamned morose that it drags me down. Everything sucks, everybody sucks, and we're all a bunch of stupid jerkoffs.

He doesn't have to remind us, though. I listen to sports radio because I want to be distracted from my pathetic every day existence as Jerkoff #180307401737

It's become nearly impossible to listen to the show anymore.

I listen to Kid Cairo's YouTube channel just to remind me of how good the show used to be.

This thread is quite telling.

The decline of the show has been quick and brutal. It's been going on far a long time but the crash has accelerated in the past 2 years and gone hyper-sonic in the last years itself.

Dewski and others nailed it.

The show has been on for a long time, this stuff happens. Lets just hope that if the rating do begin to fall that something will be done. Can the show recover to something actually listenable for several hours? Maybe, but it would take a total personality change from Dan, Terry not mailing it in every day and Mitch having a word with the boys. I really don't think that will happen, if the ratings and advertising money is there...well, sorry.

Not a bad run for a show that has been on multiple time slots and on the air for about 10-12 years. But I think it's obvious that the run is over.

I quit listening last October. I don't miss it a bit, and I enjoy all the teeth gnashing on this board. It reminds me daily of what I am "missing".

I don't mind Dan's article. It's a very big problem that UEFA and more importantly FIFA continue to ignore. The sad thing is after the Euro is over everyone will go back to not caring about racism in soccer.

If he doesn't know the dailymail is a tabloid, then he's an idiot.

But he does generalize about culture in general. Part of the reason why nationalism and xenophobia are on the rise in Europe is because of unemployment rates ranging from 14- 20%.

But he does generalize domestically. For example, Bernstein probably believes any American who has Latin American background enjoys soccer more than the other major North American sport.

i've probably said this before, but this is my main gripe with bernstein. he tries to have it both ways. you and torch! are right on the money.

on the one hand, it's ok to joke about bombing the state of pennsylvania (how many jewish people would you be killing in that effort by the way? take a look at some of the towns that are included there, dan)...but suddenly it's time to grandstand about racism in soccer? a sport he doesn't even take seriously to discuss on his show?

Europeans can't be racist, because they are better than us. Racism is a barbaric American thing. They are enlightened and civilized, and we are gun-toting, bible thumping lunatics, ready to bomb the next brown people who make the news. Dan Bernstein is a conspiring, thrifty liar, who is trying to take our freedom by controlling the media and the ACLU.

You can't promote a fake place called "TB Diddlers" for years, and run fake commercials about how fun it was to get diddled at TB's, then do an about face and be totally obsessed with this Sandusky case and talk about how you want to feed him to a wood chipper. Pick a lane. Is child molestation all shits and giggles, or is it this heinous crime that you should burn in hell for committing? I seem to remember a tag line for the show that said, "Ritalin, diddlin', and country fiddlin'" as well.

TB Diddlers had nothing to do with child rape.

It was a spot for men like Cairo and myself to literally let it all hang out.

And we had to be 21.

I tried to use a fake ID Eaglo Jeff made for me once, but that didn't work out. Turns out he made me 17 instead of 21.

DAMN YOU JEFF!!!!
