By Dan Bernstein
CBSChicago.com Senior Columnist

If nothing else, we can continue our tenuous, hopeful belief in humankind.

Even in the dark, sick heart of central Pennsylvania, where for years the emotional and cultural strength of a college football program blinded otherwise normal people to horrible crimes, justice could be done.

Even a panel that included nine jurors with direct ties to Penn State University was able to see the monster among them and send him away, understanding the local and regional shame of the truth – that a community too reverent of football enabled, abetted and facilitated the serial rape of children.

Jerry Sandusky will die in prison.

The second wave of accusers lined up by the grand jury, now including Sandusky’s adopted son, will probably stand down, as could the agents from the U.S. Justice Department lined up to prosecute Sandusky on Mann Act violations. The feds can now take proper aim at Graham Spanier, Gary Schultz, Tim Curley and the school. Time to recalibrate the gun-sights, choose targets and root out the cover-up.

A state’s addiction to college football helped Jerry Sandusky rape more boys. Pennsylvanians’ self-image as part of the church of Paterno-as-Pope clouded judgments, provided improper benefits of doubt, and will linger, properly, as a heavy cloud of shame.

Jerry Sandusky will die in prison.

This is cold, incomplete, early satisfaction.

Let’s all hope the federal investigators follow the money trail, follow the emails, follow the secret files, follow every trail as far up as it goes. We have a long-missing DA, labyrinthine connections between Penn State football, the Second Mile, deep-pocketed donors, school officials, and current Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett. Joe Paterno made millions of personal dollars with Second-Mile-connected deals – real-estate, bottled-water, convenience stores. And that’s just what has been chronicled by reporters. He, Spanier and Schultz had every venal reason to stay as quiet as possible for as long as any of them knew, whether 1994, 1998, 2001, or earlier.

Sandusky’s charity-as-victim-farm was intertwined with Penn State football since 1977, and we now know from the sworn testimony of other longtime assistant coaches that it was common for boys to be showering in their midst. There’s more than one sick bastard here, and more than one willfully ignorant adult.

Some will argue that this is closure, some kind of end to the story.

They are wrong. This opens the door for motivated authorities to continue to find the truth.

Let this be not the end, but the beginning: Every authority with every power of jurisdiction now has work to do. The words of former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis must be not just heeded, but actively acted upon.

“Sunlight is the best disinfectant,” he said.

Shine it. Shine it brightly across Pennsylvania. Shine it on dirty deals, craven coaches and political pigs on the take. Shine it on stupid students who riot violently for bad reasons, compromised journalists who can’t reconcile that their heroes are evil and national worshippers of Penn State sanctity who lack the guts to to confront painful facts.

Jerry Sandusky will die in prison.

We do not celebrate. We nod, we weep, and we ask that this only may start the powerful engines of justice in which we were raised to trust.

Stunned at the lack of apology to the jury.

Can't believe it.

And from such a stand up guy.

But wait, 10 out of the 13 jurors had PennState ties and everyone in Pennsylvania advocates child rape. How'd they get a conviction?

Well, I guess y'all can continue beating off to the Bernstein hate (because of course that's what really matters), but that doesn't change my opinion that what he wrote was, if not of the highest order, than certainly better than 'good enough'.

Ok. Because Bernstein's hate of everybody in Pennsylvania is what really mattered, right? I don't need to hear Bernstein tell me what really matters in a blog. If you did, then you aren't very smart.

I've discovered I rarely read a Dan Bernstein offering, and I don't listen nearly as much as I did "back in the day." However, I used to tell people seven years ago I don't always agree with a Dan Bernstein, but I understand his point. As the SkipBaylessing of media has created its own fungus, some have followed. Many don't realize, or choose to ignore it. But whenever stupid comes up, you see members of this very board get zapped. Ooohhhh, Mac is hitting my forehead with a carrot. HI MAC!!!

If you have an issue with Bernstein taking a strong stance on child rape, I hope it's because it's not an entertaining listen. Because we all can choose what we listen to. Otherwise, you probably wouldn't be sitting around, every day, judging the sports radio show you religiously listen to from 6 AM to 5:59 AM.

By the way, I'm not wearing pants. What do you think about this right here?

For someone who put as much time on the air to this case, and fancied himself as a guy who was going to tell the truth, etc, bring to light this story, he couldn't have been more wrong about the jury.

He just wanted to shock it seems? I simply cannot grasp how Bernsie thought that anyone wouldn't convict this monster?

I heard him talk about how they need to investigate the other coaches that said they took showers with boys and how they thought it was a normal thing. I thought that was just an obvious attempt by those coaches to make it seem more normal that Sandusky might be showering with boys. An attempt to mitigate the damage done by the discovery of one seeing Sandusky nude with a youngster in the shower. Unless some kids come forward to say that these coaches also engaged in abusive behavior, I will continue to believe thats all it was. But Beer-stain tries to make a big deal out of it and intimates that there may have been a much larger problem involving other members of the Penn state community, also engaging in abuses. I think he actually hopes thats he case for some reason. I think that there certainly was a conspiracy to cover up abuses by Sandusky, which is horrific. But I very much doubt there were others at Penn State also abusing these young men. If there were, I think some would have come forward already.

That jury was comprised of brain dead hero worshiping Pennsylvanians with zero life, according to Dan.

Bob,

Glad to have your input back, but as a lawyer you disappoint me with your fascinatin with Dan Bernstein.

He was not the judge, not the prosecutor, not a defense attorney, not a juror, and I highly doubt if any jurors or anyone directly connected with the case heard any of his thoughts the past few months on the fine citizens of PA, some of whom are relatives of mine. I have listened to Dan and not once was I tempted to call my realtives or friends in the Keystone State and scream, MOVE, THE BOMBERS ARE COMING!!!!!

When I get tired of listening to Dan's rambling about any issue I take his advice and turn the dial.

I have come to realize that this board is full of people who wake up every day looking for something to be angry about or offended by. That is why, you as an officer of the court is disappointing.

Otherwise, again, Welcome Back

:)

What fascinates me the most about Bernstein is how a guy as bright as he is can purge himself from logic and common sense and go on an hysterical witch hunt.

Really.

From jury selection til they delivered the verdict, Daniel has gone on about HOW MUCH THIS JURY WITH TIES TO PENN STATE WANTS TO LET HIM OFF THE HOOK TO CLEAR JOE PATERNO! There was no way that this collection of mouth breathers would convict Jerry Sandusky. Even yesterday when the jury was asking about supplemental charges, it was because the jury was trying to find a way to let Sandusky off.

So after the jury comes back with the only rational verdict, I'd expect Dan to say he was wrong about the jury. But that's expecting too much.

Penn State goobers aren't off the hook just yet. The vibe I'm getting is that they've gone from defending Sandusky out of loyalty to The Institution to sacrificing him so that they can move on to the greater task at hand, which is defending the legacy of Joe Paterno out of loyalty to The Institution. We haven't heard the last of their idiocy.

You're right, but you've listened to him during this trial.

He had zero belief that the jury was capable of returning a guilty verdict against Sandusky.

Admit you were wrong Dan.

And embrace salvation.

I'm curious what would've happened on campus if this was, say, March or October. Depending on how this next sequence plays out, we still may see some nonsense yet.

Speaking of apologies (why, I still don't know, but .....) ..... if and when we reach a point where it's made quite clear for all to see (whether they like it or not) that Paterno was one of the disgusting "humans" that had no problem aiding and abetting Sandusky for years and years and years and years, what will the mindless nulls such as Franco Harris have to say then exactly?
