Post subject:  7/2: Bye Bye Asik?

It's back to the SCORE Studios today for Terry & Dan B., and needless to say, those guys have a lot to talk about between 1:15-ish & 6p on 670 The SCORE & 670thescore.com. Among the topics sure to be discussed...

The title of this thread is "Bye Bye Asik?", as in Bulls' restricted free agent Omer Asik and whether the Bulls should match a reported 3 year, $24.3 million offer the Houston Rockets made on the first day of NBA free agency. As much as Bernsy likes the Bulls' backup center, considering the Bulls' lack of salary cap space and staring at the NBA's luxury tax right smack in the face, might the team be better off letting Asik go down to Houston? Keep in mind NBA contracts can't be signed officially until July 11th. You can bet there will be talk about that this afternoon.

The White Sox ran into a brick wall the last 2 days in hot, steamy Yankee Stadium as Yankees' starters Hireki Kuroda & Phil Hughes provided manager Joe Girardi with back-to-back quality starts while the Sox duo of Jake Peavy & Gavin Floyd got stuck with the losses as the Sox & Yanks split a 4-game series in the Bronx. It's an off day for the Southsiders today before the A.L. Champion Rangers (no relation to The SCORE's own Chris Rongey) visit U.S. Cellular Field for a series tomorrow in a series Texas should feel right at home with 90+ degree heat forecast all 3 days.

The Cubs actually swept the Astros at Wrigley over the weekend, for what that's worth as Anthony Rizzo continues to make things happen in his first week on the North side. The Cubs start a 7-game trip of their own tonight vs. the Braves in Atlanta.

You can bet the guys will argue about the 5 guys going to the MLB All-Star Game in Kansas City next Tuesday night, and whether guys like the White Sox' A.J. Pierzynski have a right to be upset about getting snubbed.

Last but not least, if it's the "Boers & Bernstein Show" lately, there might be discussion on...wait for it...what CNN has uncovered regarding a cover-up involving the Penn State football program and what the late Joe Paterno may have withheld. Oh brother! All that and more today.

Probably not, but they'll do it anyway.

I have no idea what they are going to do with Asik. They would end up showing Boozer the door that same off-season that Asik is due the $14+ million so they could justify the one big year, but, to me, this type of move only makes sense if you're willing to move J.Noah to re-allocate their money. Taj Gibson is also going to be due a new contract soon, and he'll likely get a bigger deal than Asik. That could mean four big men (Boozer, Noah, Gibson and Asik) all making pretty big money and that, to me, is not good allocation of their cap money.

While there's a shortage of big men in today's NBA, I hope the Bulls don't match the offer the Rockets gave Omer Asik and allow him to move on to Houston. The Bulls simply aren't in position to be adding salary and are mired in salary cap hell as is right now. In addition to staring at the NBA's luxury tax right smack in the face, I don't think the Bulls are in position to land a free agent either. This with the very real possibility Derrick Rose doesn't play one minute of an 82-game regular season schedule trying to fully recover from a torn ACL in Game 1 of last spring's NBA Playoff opener vs. the 76ers.

Wouldn't Asik's contract make him potential trade bait as a large "expiring contract" entering his final year?

If paying Asik means you can't pay Gibson, then bye bye Asik. I'm still pissed at those free throws you missed. Although CJ Watson shouldn't have passed the ball to you, but he's going to be gone too.

Spmack, I hope the Bulls don't match the Rockets' offer. They have NO BUSINESS adding salary right now. They might not have the $$$$ to lure Kirk Hinrich for a second tour of duty here, let alone the bad knees of Brandon Roy as potential replacements while Derrick Martell Rose recovers from a torn ACL. It's not basketball smart, let alone financial smart.

Here's the Monday Game Plan with the guys:

*2P: CBSSports.com's Gregg Doyle-New Penn State Trouble?
*3:30P: "The Second Half"

"Scoreboard Updates": Zach Zaidman

With no White Sox game tonight, Terry's "two favorite words in show business", Laurence Holmes, has a "full boat show" starting at 6p. Consider yourselves warned. Laurence's NBC5 teammate, weekend meteorologist Cheryl Scott, along with SCORE teammates Chris Rongey on the Sox & Jason Goff on the Bulls, plus NBA writer Chris Sheridan of SheridanHoops.com will be among Holmes' guests. If that's not enough, "Ask Herb" airs at 9p. Sorry..."Dr. Phil" wasn't available.

Tank the season, 2013 draft is filthy with potential Centers among the lottery picks, 4 out of the top 6 currently project to be Centers.

"A lot of people came out with strong opinions without really having all the facts...."

"Oh my God, there is no way that this jury will ever be impartial. Look at all the Penn State ties! I guess we have to wait til the Feds get their turn...."

Not Thursday at 5.

Joe Paterno's legacy at Penn State has been destroyed. Bernsy explains here:

He was referencing the fact that Paterno covered up bad things in his program. I thought I heard that too, but he saved himself by referencing knowing Paterno had many cover ups. He didn't say he knew about this one.

Well, he didn't know everything then.

Yes, Terry is right though. It was known for years that Penn State had major discipline problems. They just referenced the house party fight.

However, let's not pretend that everyone knew about the Sandusky stuff.

Penn State officials treated this as if it never happened. Something really stinks here, Rick...

There is a 0% chance that Penn State or the Big Ten or the NCAA cancels this football season.

It's just not feasible. There are other options out there that would punish them without punishing other teams.

Didn't Sandusky take his kid-diddling show on the road, including the Cell at some point? Maybe Terry pulled open the wrong men's room stall door at the Cell and did a McQueary.

In reality, a 5 year bowl ban and a loss of all television revenue would be much more damaging than shutting down the season, and it would not punish all the other teams on the schedule.

Wouldn't that be the NCAA's job? I'm not sure if the NCAA will take any kind of action vs. Penn State, even though I've heard the term "lack of institutional control" involving the football program.

$24.3 million for 3 years for a guy who averaged 3 points, 5 rebounds with the Bulls, not to mention was plagued by foul trouble at times? Not a chance!
