Dan's postgame blogumn is about how Jay Cutler has conquered THE NARRATIVE by playing hurt. Except that Suh dropped him on his head, and he probably has a concussion, and so in conquering THE NARRATIVE about how he's such a pansy (THE NARRATIVE about how he's also a dickweed remains unconquered), he played not just hurt but possibly concussed-hurt, and that to me seems worse than any narrative-slaying that can be done.

Quote:
As of press time, the only official description of the injury after Ndamukong Suh body-slammed him in the second quarter is “bruised ribs,” which could mean anything from a team that would describe a shredded knee as a “strain,” a lacerated kidney as “back spasms,” and decapitation as “ennui.”

It’s possible that Cutler’s head whipping into the ground was enough to cause another in a hazily-accounted list of concussions going back to high school, and that could change the way we talk about this. But we’ll agree to trust that they wouldn’t be that reckless (would they?), and that reputable doctors determined that it was something else, and that no further damage could be done by allowing him to continue.

"Okay, look. He probably has a concussion, and we know the Bears lie about this shit all the time, but for the sake of argument let's just say the Bears' medical staff and p.r. department aren't full of shit, you know, just this once."

Irish Boy/Dave In Champaign Memorial Cumbersome Metaphor:
Quote:
It had been easy for network broadcasts to seize on the storyline, cynically fanning the flames of doubt about Cutler’s toughness and legitimizing the silliness — dragging out half-literate tweets from players and purported analysts too many drinks into their respective evenings that day — while then trying to take the high road and dismissing it, after they already pulled the pin on the dramatic grenade.

Do grenade explosions necessitate a bellows?

Happy the-threading!

"Narrative" is one of those new hot words that the kids are using nowadays, but I've always used. I feel cheated.

and of course, one of the bernstein-approved websites has a story in the tank for whenever dan wants to ascend the soapbox...

http://deadspin.com/5953803/five-pee+we ... -52+0-loss

pee-wee football. 5 concussions. 52-0 loss? short of a shirtless lance armstrong getting into a car and running over a concussed victim of sandusky, i dunno what's more in his wheelhouse.

I'm surprised he would make Twitter sound less than glorious like that.

Bears medical staff were so concerned about his concussion that they immediately had him make a practice throw on the sideline to make sure his head was OK.

I was skimming the article before I read it, and I saw what looked like a one-sentence paragraph with a nested clause and I was like "THAT'S TROUBLE" and then I read it and yeah, you've got Michael Strahan throwing grenades (from the FOX-hole?) and Jon Gruden running up to the explosion site to fan the doubt flames from the drama grenade.

It might actually be fun listening to the show today with Terry acting like he watched the game even though we all know damn well he didn't. My guess is there will be lots of "I thought so too", and "yeah, that's what I saw" coming from Boers today, and maybe we'll get a "that's what my guy said."

Ding! We have #1 for the show.

When BernSTINE started to talk about how to attack the Bears D w/ "hooks and curls" Terry immediately blurts out, "You I think that too."

It begins again....
