Has this show lost it since Goff left. "Matty" makes dumb comments frequently and adds next to nothing to the show, and Goff was the only guy that would actually stand up to Bernstein and the caller bashing has reach it's apex with "Matty's list". They better be glad the show down the dial really sucks, otherwise they'd lose ratings. |

The tenor of the show has changed very much, from one mostly based in satire to something much more earnest (vaguely informed by the writing of Malcolm Gladwell and Thomas Friedman), but I don't think that was precipitated by Jason leaving. In fact, inasmuch as Jason was a major part of the day they blamed flagging White Sox revenue in the middle of a worldwide recession on fans who fear black gangs and don't trust Jews with their money, I know it wasn't. |

For the good of the show Is it possible to construct a time machine so that we may go back and murder Gladwell and Friedman's grandfathers? |

I see the show as the voice of the middlebrow fan. It exists mainly for those who enjoying laughing along with li'l danny at the drooling mouth breathers put on the air by drinky. The show is a product of the limitations of danny's pseudo-intellectualism wherein he cites the work of Gladwell as some type of hard science and completely misses the point of modern statistical analysis. Listening to danny makes a certain type of person feel very smart. The carefully selected callers reinforce that. |

However, I think I have more faith in Dan's intellect than you do. I should really like to think he's above leaning on pop-social-sci potboilers to give us stuff like "it's so awesome that Derrick Rose is on billboards in Guangzhou" or "football is great because it's superficially complicated," but that's where we've been with this show, so I could be wrong. |

Nothing to do with Jason. The idea of an erudite sophisticated sports is what's changed the show. Baseball Prospectus, Fangraphs, Matt Bowen, Football Outisders, Pro Football Focus are treated as gospel. Days of TB Diddler's and the hockey gay are long gone. |

It's disappointing that the one person at the station who did an intelligent, clever, and sometimes silly show that was such an easy listen when he was a fill-in and weekend host now, as a full-time host, does everything he can to actively discourage intelligent discourse. |

Goff brought very little to the table IMO. Little bit of NBA. Fake bravado. Anything else? |

Help me out here. Yep, and the NY Press book reviews. It's all there: the worship of billionaires, corporations, and neoliberal policy; the fetishization of "information" without knowing what to do with it, the holding dear of empty jargon, the metaphors both tortured and tortuous. How did I never see it before today? Oh lord. |

I love how people call Dan a pseudo intellectual. OK, so Dan is a dick/loser/douche for identifying himself as smarter than the meatball fans. Doesn't that make people who call Dan a pseudo intellectual a dick/loser/douche for saying Dan isn't smart? Really, you're then putting yourself above Dan. Doing exactly what Dan does. Hey hey!! |

I've never thought Dan is a pseudo intellectual. I'll rely on the CV as an indication that he has intelligence and he has some deep thoughts. However, his show is lazy while pretending to be in depth. There is, by his own admission, no production. Anything he brings to the air is just something he happened upon in his normal leisurely pursuits. |

The only thing that matters is how sure you sound when you say it." |

I dont think so. People dont dislike Dan for calling stupid people stupid. It's that he often pretends to know things that he clearly doesnt, whether its coaching schematics, insider info, or applying advanced statistics to evaluations of players. He also often contradicts himself and/or applies circular logic in justifying his positions. And of course there's the constant water-carrying for every GM and corporate sponsor in town while simultaneously claiming to speak truth to power. When I say he's a bad radio host and not as smart as other people believe him to be, Im not saying Im any better in the same way that Im not saying I can be a good starting QB in the NFL just because I say Mark Sanchez sucks. He's a public figure, especially on this board, who is being judged on his job performance. |

Yeah, that makes sense. I think we call hime a "sway-doe" intellectual because he comes off as one on the radio. Condescending, lecturing and brow beating everyone on all topics yet when he tries to talk about said topics himself he exposes his limited knowledge and understanding. Combine that with his peppering of "Big Words!" and other jargon that he doesn't fully grasp and you can see why we call him that. |

Nearly impossible to have a full, deep understanding of every sports topic. Having a basic understanding in order to lead a conversation is probably enough in most scenarios. Especially considering the listeners. He probably knows enough to carry the conversation for the vast majority of listeners. Not enough depth for some? Of course. But I'd rather listen to high level conversation that I can look in to further on my own time, than the same old shit every other show discusses ad nauseam. |
