College football players "remind" Bernstein of slaves. WHICH IN NO WAY MEANS HE EQUATES IT TO SLAVERY, OK? THAT'S NOT WHAT HE'S SAYING, SO DON'T EVEN GO THERE. It's just good logic: 1) They are black 2) They are being forced, against their will, to nail coeds and receive free education for the next four years. And for all you racists out there, LaQuan bought those diamond earrings HIMSELF. He woke up EVERYDAY last summer at 3 AM to work his paper route on a RUSTY SCHWINN BICYCLE WITH FAULTY BRAKES. SO FUCK YOU. And his mom had been thinking about buying that Lexus way before they had even met any of those nice gentlemen who call themselves "boosters," okay? |

You're missing my point Q. I agree it's a stupid comparison on every level. I'm saying it's become borderline acceptable in our society to compare almost anything to slavery, which I find to be an extreme lack of perspective collectively. |

I definitely think it is somehow less "taboo" for white people to openly complain about and even merely generally discuss racial issues now that there is a black President. I think I can remember speaking about this with Ivan 2 or more years ago. It is a definite phenomenon. However, much like the NFL - just scaled-up - we are copycats, and when we find a way to injure an opponent or counter-attack, we usually go to that well until it's dry. The slavery thing, the Hitler thing, those are all ways to wrest the tone of a conversation irretrievably to one side. Merely opposing that side becomes heinous then. I'd bet that a lot of times, there's almost a footrace for whom can extract such a meme-tool in a debate. I disagree with almost all of that. To your first point, I dont think this is a race issue. I think it's just Dan Bernstein being a fucking obtuse troll. To your last one, let's look at it. Bernsie says National Signing Day and college recruiting is comparable to slavery. I dont think it is considered heinous or wrong to oppose it. I actually would question the character of anyone who supports the analogy. So I think you are off base on this one. Bernsie's opinions are those of a troll and not reflective the general population. |

didn't hear the full show today, but I think a few posters nailed the whole Bernstein ethos today quite well--he could care fuck-all about race, class, or even damaged CTE brains, as long as we listen and a few of us call him up and yell at him about it and others post here. All you need to know about Danny is he could have gone hard with the slavery angle to Fitz and he didn't cuz HE'S a SPONSOR and though he puts on edgy like a shirt every day, his favorite outfit is the one with corporate nipple-enhancements. And I say all this as a guy who loves him as a radio personality and has at least 2-3x a month of eerie connection/deja vu with him because we have kids with similar ages and are the same age ourselves. I can love all that and just lament that ultimately he's a skilled provocateur and entertainer who goes home after his show to a world view that is completely supported by data, big $$, and the smartest guys in the room... |

Allow them to do ads! Then the true market is in play and the kids that companies want, will get paid. Nobody needs to determine it, other than the market. Of course, every football player at USC would have a dealer auto...but whats wrong with that? |

The funny thing is that professional sports are much closer to an actual slave trade. They just get paid more. Professional athletes have: 1) Very little choice as to where they end up. Prospective players get told where to go. 2) The deals they sign are not really negotiated by them. They are negotiated by players associations before they are a member of that association. 3) NFL Combine 4) Unbreakable contracts exist in the pro leagues. If a player wants to switch teams, they are told no. In college, they are told they may have to sit out a year. 5) Trades. You are literally selling a person. Now, obviously the pay is better in the pro leagues, but I don't think being underpaid was the problem with slavery. Oh, and once again, let me point out that playing NCAA sports is completely voluntary, there are thousands of people who would be willing to take the "bad deal" they get, and that for 99% of NCAA Division 1 football and basketball players they receive FAR more in benefits than they generate for the school. To put it in a way that Bernstein can understand, the value above replacement athlete in terms of money is so small that only a small group of players generate enough value to cover the cost of the scholarship and then numerous other benefits. Oh, and by the way, most of the players get paid under the table too that are worth more than the cost of a scholarship. |

I'd like to see this idea happen with the money going into a trust fund they get after their career is over. I see a lot of problems with an 18 year old top recruit getting a million dollars from the local car dealership with all the street agents and other people in his life that are looking to make a buck off of him.Schools should also be allowed to provide a few thousand dollars a month to players for living expenses. |

Ok but say 60 scholarship football players and 12 hoops guys is around $1.7M per year. And you know as soon as this pops Title IX will pop as well as the lesser sports athletes. Can of worms to be sure. |

Can of worms to be sure. At worst, they'd have to throw some money at some girls and they'd pay the players less. Title IX does not guarantee equal funding. If it did, then we'd have $100 million dollar volleyball stadiums on campuses.

The nations best volleyball player would probably get a monthly check too. Now, if it was mandated that every athlete gets a certain amount, then all athletes would need it. However, most of the smaller schools could never afford it so that won't happen. |

The slavery thing is just about the stupidest analogy anyone can ever try to make when it comes to anything sports related. |

I don't know that the players are slaves, but I do think the football and basketball players make a lot more money for the school and the NCAA than the value of their scholarships. The vast majority of the NCAA basketball players never make it to the NBA, so their one year of free tuition is as good as it gets for them. How much are they really going to learn when they are flying around the country to play basketball games? As for college football there are much better odds that those guys can make the pros. However, given the rough nature of football it's hardly worth the risk of paralysis and permanent bodily injury just for a scholarship. Honestly, there are a lot of athletes who are not going to make good use of their scholarships. The NCAA spins it as though the players are students first and a lot of the players wouldn't qualify academically to get into the universities they play for. |
