This one has got CSFMB written all over it: Q: “How tall are you really?” — Mike A: 5-8. Probably a fraction over that, if age and gravity have not taken a toll. But we’ll go with what’s on the driver’s license. Fess up. |

It was on the Score website. That was about the highlight of the interview. |

Quote: Q: “At what age did you become a Cubs fan?” — Brian A: I grew up a White Sox fan. JORR got his email answered! Quote: If you graph WSCR’s recent run, you’ll notice that it really began when the current lineup of shows locked in. There is no host lacking a college education, now, and the pandering to a lower common denominator of fan has been minimized. And not a moment too soon -- I couldn't keep on living in a world where people without college educations were permitted to talk about watching sports. Tell me, are there 200-level courses in Watching Line Play, or is that strictly an introductory survey? Quote: That is also the reason for the lack of infighting you mention. The Score made bold programming moves to make the station smarter, stronger and smoother both on the air and off. All hail Team Bernstein. |

You know what contributed to the Score's meteoric rise? Getting Mac back and using PPMs to report listenership rather than hilariously inaccurate diaries. What's a more likely reason for the Score (and, in spite of itself, 1000) going way up while WGN went way down: a change in how Arbitron collected data, or the post-secondary educational credentials of Matt Spiegel? Could it be a coincidence that around 2009, sports talkers in every major market skyrocketed through the Arbitron rankings? It's because people have been listening to sports talk all along; it just wasn't being accounted for. It also might be relevant that in recent years, the Bears got serious about trying to win, the Bulls drafted their first superstar in years, and the Blackhawks won a championship. It's easy to forget that Chicago sports was a bit of a wasteland for a while there. Like, seriously, good god, how did this station even get through 2002? Now, even bad teams are worth talking about. But no, everything is better at the Score because everyone either agrees with or acts like Dan Bernstein. Just ask Dan Bernstein. I'm glad the Score no longer panders to the lowest common denominator of fans. Now they just pander to Jerry Reinsdorf. And business has never been better! |

I imagine Monsters/HFC days at the Score dwarfed what they are putting up today. The station was certainly better from a work product standpoint and had a more loyal following. I know that Finfer's U of I degree has made all the difference to me as a listener. by the way in the Score golden era they had Shaer- degree from somewhere Jiggetts- Harvard Boers- NIU McNeil- Ball State Murph- SIU Is that so much different than the degrees the current lineup earned? |

Pandering to the lowest common denominator? I guess I missed the day athletics became an intellectual pursuit. The whole idea of being a "fan" flies in the face of logic, rational thought and the life of the mind. If anything, Dan is partly responsible for all these pseudo-intellectual sports radio fans. The wannabe highbrow Bernsie parrots who are really middlebrow cretins with English degrees that feel they must be heard. |

I know that when I started listening to the Score I had barely earned a high school diploma. I have become a degreed man with many volumes of leather bound great books on my shelf since Dan Bernstien began broadcasting. Coincidence? I think not. |

It was only North that didn't have a degree of all of the Score's full time hosts. So if Bernstein wanted to say Fuck you to him, he should have just done so. By the way, Goff doesn't have a college degree. I think he said he did one year at SIU. Maybe it was Bernstein's influence at the station that never allowed him to be a full timer. Drinky went to bible college. That doesn't count in Bernstein's mind either. It's just stupid fairy tales according to him. |

Anecdotally, it seems to me that the station had people who proudly identified themselves as Score guys in those days. I don't get the same feeling today. |

for a guy who frequently questions correlation, it seems like an odd statment...however, as a narcissist, it is a perfectly understandable statement |

I'm not so sure the listener base was bigger in the Monsters days. Remember that 820 had a bad signal. I won't argue that the audience has grown, but I suspect it's been a much steadier growth than the fantasyland Dan is selling where they fired North and Murph and subsequently took over the world. They may not have had the analytics to prove it, but I bet the Score was doing pretty well around 2006-2007, when the Sox were coming off a championship, the Bears went to the Super Bowl on a road fraught with obstacles (Good Rex/Bad Rex, Tank Johnson, ass-crowning), the Bulls had their best season since the dynasty, and the Cubs dumped money on everyone. And yet North and Murph had shows. I really hate defending Mike North, because he's pretty awful, but seeing as how my favorite talk show host ever turned into a variation on Mike North, I guess I feel a little better about it. The guy, for better or worse, was a huge part of getting full-time sports talk off the ground in Chicago, and you don't have to be a genius to see why his style worked. Personally, I can do without North's act, but to act as if the entire station and market are better off without him is pretty shitty. Murph, too. Like Dan always says about Rockford, sports talk is never going to be more than what it is, which in this case is just a bunch of blowhards complaining about a TV show they watched and inviting other blowhards to do the same. You can have fun with it, which I hope Dan might remember one of these years, but at its core it's just stupid bullshit to keep people's minds off the stuff that dogs them for most hours of the day. They can talk about how their audience is college-educated and all that, maybe even have the balls to say their real competition is WFMT and WBEZ (WXRT does this), but if your listeners are so smart, why are all your ads for strip clubs, boner pills, and an irritable and belligerent loan shark? There was fundamentally nothing wrong with North talking sports to other guys who liked sports. Same with Murph. And it was awesome when B&B subverted the intrinsic silliness of sports talk rather than trying to transcend it. |

I don't think it's offensive to say you want college educated people doing the sports shows at the Score. But they've always had it. North was the only exception. So I don't get his point of even saying it. |

Beardown wrote: I don't think it's offensive to say you want college educated people doing the sports shows at the Score. Not offensive, but just a little odd since the job requires very little of what you would learn in college. Its like saying you want a Lifeguard, Caddy, or Driving instructor college educated. |
