Let's see if Bernstein's tone towards Illinois athletics changes appreciably in the next year.

Why?

Are they a sponsor now?

What does this do to Northern and DePaul? It certainly has to squeeze NIU out. I swear, nothing good happens to that place.

This bums me out. I appreciated that Illinois athletics had a limited presence in the Chicago radio market. It helped to emphasize the Chicagoland/downstate dichotomy.

Hopefully it leads to a move to Division III followed by a loss in accreditation.

WRITE THE ROBERT FEDER COLUMN ANNOUNCING THIS

Quote:
University of Illinois football and basketball are about to run up the Score.

Mitch Rosen, program director of WSCR "SportsRadio 670 The SCORE, Chicago's Sports Station and Voice of the Fan," announced that the Illini would move their Chicago-area broadcasts from Salem-owned WIND, where Illinois's flagship university had languished for eight years, to the CBS Radio-owned 50,000-watt sports talker. This adds to their sizable footprint throughout the state of Illinois and beyond.

"Adding U of I football and hoops to our 'team roster' will allow us to increase revenue dramatically," noted CBS Chicago regional president Rod Zimmerman, adding "with the Illini and Bears [at news radio sister stations WBBM-AM and WCFS-FM] as part of our family, Chicago listeners and advertisers will really score a touchdown."

"Also, by increasing our play-by-play commitments, we won't have to pay for as many on-air shifts," Zimmerman continued.

The longtime sports talker garnered minor controversy in recent years by being critical of the Illinois basketball program, accusing U of I officials of obstructing justice, hiring an unqualified head coach, and insisting upon dressing a 20-year-old up as an Indian. In turn, devoted Illini fans accused longtime afternoon hosts Terry Boers and Dan Bernstein of 'hurting Illini recruiting.'"

"This changes the calculus," Bernstein noted, hinting that the environment around the venerable sports talker will never be as toxic as WGN was during the tenure of Randy Michaels.

"I think we can safely say 'I'm an Illini guy,'" quipped Rosen.

University of Illinois athletics will air on WSCR whenever and will be hosted by someone who can't possibly sound as comical as the NIU guy.

This will absolutely change Bernstines attitude towards the school. They are a sponsor just like any other.

Does this follow along with the myth that they don't criticize the White Sox? I mean, besides Bernstein's comment today that they are terrible and he already finds them unwatchable? Or their repeated bashing of Hawk? Or the frequent criticism of Ventura/Ozzie for steal attempts and bunts? Other than that it's all sunshine and rainbows when the discuss the south-siders.

Your sound logic does not fit the board's WSOX narrative.

Seems to me we're going to get a pretty clear answer to whether this is a myth over the course of the next year or two.

Well that depends. Terry has been known to be an Illini supporter in the past. He's been down on the football program since the Zook era and they soured a bit on Bruce when the car crash scandal happened, but they softened that stance in recent years. I don't recall any strong opinions on John Groce.

The problem I have with your "test" is that it is highly subjective. Many on this board have selective hearing.

Zippy I think their tone has changed a little. This is based on maybe a couple hours of listening every week so I could just be checking in at the wrong time.

They had a very strong dislike for most things affiliated with the Sox. IMO that has soften since they came to the Score.

No, they just bash the Cubs at every chance they get. At this point, I'd say rightfully so.

Obviously you are entitled to your opinion but I hear Bernstein criticize the Sox on a regular basis. I don't recall them be harder on them in the past but I'm guessing their comments were pretty positive in 2005. And contrary to some others I do believe Bernstein is a Sox fan. Terry seems to have less of an allegiance other than to the Rays.

They verbally fellate Theo and Ricketts every chance they get.

I wish someone would bash me like that.

This is what I'm talking about when I say people hear what they want to hear. Their over-the-top praise for Theo and vocal support for Ricketts are undeniable. They both think the Cubs are heading in the right direction. Going back a few years, Terry loved the hiring of both Dusty and Lou.

To quote a wise old man..."Listening is a skill". Maybe that's why milquetoast shows like W&S appeal to the overly sensitive.

So, what I'm getting from all of this, B&B slurp Reinsdorf, Theo & Ricketts. They bash the managers & players. In other words, they suck up to suits.

They seem to hate White Sox fans for not showing up to games and giving their money to Jerry Reinsdorf, whereas they seem to hate Cubs fans for existing.
