You and CGS both disappear for weeks, months, and then just carpet-bomb the whole board with THOUGHTS. At least you generally stick around to reply to the replies, though.

I'll be back more frequently.

Carpet Bombing is FUN, though. The Sox give me endless material, but it is always the same!!!

My dad's almost 90. He rambles on incoherently, but I don't complain. Gotta respect your elders.

I get what you are saying but would the .110 average be any better if they were all groundouts to the right side instead of strikeouts?

I am sick and tired of watching all these MLB hitters STRIKE THE FUCK OUT.

The game is a FUCKING BORE!!!!!

Thank God Bernstein is fascinated by STATS.
He obviously watches little or no Baseball.

Bernstein is the goof who called Batting Average OLD SCHOOL. An OVERRATED Statistic.

What's Spieg's excuse when he talks Baseball? Kid keeping him awake at night?

Yeah, the strikeouts are definitely going to become a problem for the game, if they haven't already. I'm pretty sure fans don't want to pay grand whore prices just to watch highly paid players swing and miss. I would expect some type of adjustment to the strikezone in the near future.

In the Cards/Philly game tonight, tie game with a runner on second and no outs. The Cards bunt the runner to third. Thus, giving up one of Danny's precious outs - no doubt he would be yelling about this decision. After a walk, Allen Craig hits a sharp ground ball to short which gets past Rollins and scores the run.

So the bunt moves the guy to 3rd which brings the infield in two steps which is JUST enough to sneak the hit by the SS. That's too complicated for the metrics to factor in, but it's real.

Of course the counter argument is that sacrificing reduces total run probability for the inning.

Baseball is a complex game with many nuances. It isn't as black and white as Danny wants the stats to make it. Terry (I think) understands this but just doesn't seem to care to enough to make an argument anymore.

Earl Weaver was the first person to call your 27 outs "precious." It suited his teams well. Of course, his teams' hitting were built for on-base percentage and home runs whereas the Cardinals are built for punch-and-judy stuff. On the pitching side, the Cardinals--at least under Dave Duncan--were built to induce grounders rather than strikeouts. You could argue both approaches are more volatile, as they require more moving parts and run the risk of more things going wrong.

Saying the Cardinals are built for "punch-and-judy stuff" is simply wrong. But, whatever.

The point of my post wasn't to discuss the Cardinals offense, but to point out that simply regurgitating fangraphs statistics can't capture the essence of the game.

He and statheads recognize playing for one run situations.
