Dan went off on some sort of tangent today about how everything remotely involving American Indians is blatantly racist and must be stopped. If taken to its logical conclusion the name of the city Chicago must be changed because it it is an Indian name just like Indiana or Indian Head Park. |

I don't think people are offended by the actual logos of the Redskins and Blackhawks. The Indians logo is offensive cuz it's a cartoon. Redskins is offensive for obvious reasons. The name "Indians" is offensive because that's the name the White Man gave them. Dumb ass Christopher Columbus thought he was in India, called them Indians and the name stuck. But Blackhawks isn't offensive. That's the name of an actual tribe. |

We'd have to rename a lot of stuff from here to Iowa if we couldn't name anything after Black Hawk. |

We need a group of Norwegians to protest the Vikings name. Or a bunch of Catholics to protest the name Crusaders. |

Everything I read though said the name was based on that squadron. |

WWII started in 1939. Not only that, Black Hawk being on the chest should indicate it was named for a Native American. My mistake was bad. This is worse. |

oops...WW1 the Blackhawks were named by the first owner, a coffee tycoon who was Commander of the 333rd Machine Gun Battalion of the 86th Infantry in WWI.......The Battalion was nicknamed the "Black Hawks". |

Post subject: | Re: Dan's Indian Rant |
Yeah, the original owner of the Hawks named the team for his old infantry division, but the man himself is the antecedent for all things Black Hawk around here. sigh, here, Beardown, let me wiki it for you: Quote: In 1926, [McLaughlin] was granted an expansion franchise by the National Hockey League. He named the team the Blackhawks after the nickname of his army unit, the 86th Infantry "Blackhawk" Division, where he had served in the 333rd Machine Gun Battalion. Quote: The 86th Infantry Division was a unit of the United States Army in World War I and World War II.
The division saw no combat in World War I. It was activated 25 August 1917 at Camp Grant in Rockford, Illinois, went overseas in August 1918, returned to the United States in November 1918, and was inactivated in January 1919. |

OK. WWI then. I didn't know that. I'll bet a lot of people didn't know!!!!! Still, you think of the actual Native American since he's on the chest. No matter why the owner did it. |

Bernstein is the last person to bitch about this thing. If he founded a basketball team, he'd call them the "Wang Whippers". The logo would be a huge black player wang whipping a big dumb white as he dunks on him. Also in the logo would be Bernstein under the basket, on the baseline, pointing and laughing at the big dumb white. Imagine that logo. Imagine the reaction. Bernstein would not change it no matter the outcry. He'd say "Bite Me, bitches. This is my team!!! Buy your own and name it what you want." |

Beardown wrote: The logo would be a huge black player wang whipping a big dumb white as he dunks on him. Is there a genitive missing from "player" here, or would it actually just be an anthropomorphic black penis dunking a basketball? EDIT: Oh, wait, I get it. You need to hyphenate "wang-whipping." I thought the wang itself was the player, whose body, a wang, whipped the white as part of its dunknig motion. |

In my minds eye, thinking how Bernstein would design it, it would be the player with the wang out. The wang would be half his body size. The dumb white would be getting it in the face in a whipping fashion. There would be a blur in the logo to indicate how fast and hard he's been whipped. He would be dunking the ball simultaneously. The facial expression of the dumb white would be that of pain, shame and embarrassment. |

Abbatacola was trolling and got Dan talking about this. The Blackhawks logo is not offensive, they don't have a mascot running around acting like a fool. The ginger midget Baffoe even wrote a column saying the Hawks logo isn't. I've read a few articles that made reference to the Blackhawks organ-I-zation actually has reached out to some Native American councils. McDonough is on top of things. |

I was a little disappointed to see smatterings of headdresses and war paint at the rally. Usually the fanbase does a pretty good job self-policing that element of Indian play out of the collective identity. No war chants, no scalping references, just a team from Chicago named for a midwestern chief. |

Curious Hair wrote: I'm getting the avatar assignment of all avatar assignments here, aren't I. I prefer your idea of an anthropomorphic penis dunking a basketball. In my mind he has wangs for fingers and veiny, trunk-like, dong arms that just whip the shit out any player that didn't pop out of a Dan Bernstein approved Basketball Broodmareâ„¢. |
