The fact that he needed to write the column I've copy and pasted below after a week of bitching and condescendingly talking down to fans about how they should not celebrate the title win in the ways they do, just goes to show how this guy can't fucking drop anything until he believes everyone has come around to his thinking. What pains me is I've become a B & B loyal listener since MJH went away and, for the most part, enjoy the random Bernstein rants. This, along with his bizarre, perhaps hidden motive laden, over-the-top non-stop ranting of Paula Deen on a sports talk show, has made the man outright unbearable over the last week or so. Sidenote - I have no problem with discussions of non-sports topics on the show and believe Deen was appropriate of some discussion. Its just been the daily, "can't help himself" rants that have gotten old. Look, I agree with him on many points in the column: being surrounded by drunk idiots during the parade, hot weather and waiting for hours, etc. But to tell people that this is not how one should celebrate or to actually tell people that they convince themselves that the celebration was fun is so fucking smug and arrogant. So he takes a big shit on the entire way cities do these celebrations and how incredibly dumb they are and then this dumb motherfucker says this...

Quote:
I’m not sure what to do about any of this, only that something must be done.

Really? You write a column like that and offer NO SOLUTIONS!? One would think that someone so judgmental about the mere minions who celebrate their teams championships would be clever, ingenious, or cunning enough to provide a handful of new ideas to scrap the old, archaic ways of celebration. But no, not Dan. Bitch, condescend and complain some more. Dan, you are no better than the minions you frown upon. Actually it makes you worse. They're at least happy.

Bernstein: We Need A New Celebration

By Dan Bernstein
CBSChicago.com Senior Columnist

(CBS) – Championship get-togethers are a shared delusion.

Millions of people gather in oppressive heat to applaud the introduction of the equipment manager and assistant director of player personnel, watch a video of plays they just saw, and scream “Wooooooooooo!” (white people only, except for Ronnie Wickers). Then everybody goes home. All involved convince themselves it’s a worthwhile endeavor, despite the fact that it always pretty much sucks.

Metra trains teem with suburbanites, among them the usual suspects: bro-hugging frat-boys, girls in skimpy, logoed apparel looking like team-sanctioned hookers, the guy who will pass out an hour before the parade even begins and ruin the rest of the day for his friends, and parents having to remind their children that some of the words that they are hearing are NOT appropriate.

Then they march over to the park and stand there. For hours. Waiting, sweating, “Woooooooooo!”-ing and holding that ideal spot from which to watch inebriated players make asses of themselves.

The parade is fine, all waving and smiling and scraps of paper and comically-inflated attendance figures. It’s the pathetic school assembly that follows that needs a swift re-engineering, at the very least.

For every nice memorable moment there are countless ones to forget. Actually, I can only think of only one episode that was in any way worth the trouble: Paul Konerko awarding a tearful, appreciative Jerry Reinsdorf the World Series ball. Everything else is Kris Versteeg’s cringe-inducing attempt at rapping, Steve Perry trying again to sing, Jack Haley trying to dance, Corey Crawford working blue, Duncan Keith quoting Benito Mussolini, and Dennis Rodman doing anything.

The Bulls’ rallies became perfunctory occasions, the motions always featuring veiled comments indicative of the endless, petty infighting between players, coaches and upper management. Michael Jordan, Phil Jackson and Jerry Krause put on forced smiles long enough to mutter a few platitudes, then got back to their usual grudges and resentments.

These painful affairs come after the real celebrations, once the genuine emotions have already been expressed. We saw Jordan jumping on the scorer’s table or crying while clutching the trophy, champagne splashing off plastic-covered lockers, or any number of jubilant Blackhawks taking their turn with the Stanley Cup, obviously aware of the historic significance. That’s the party that matters.

The rest is pandering. The champion has an executive flatter the fans by making them think they had something to do with winning, local TV newspeople put on jerseys – seemingly because they believe their viewers are stupid, and are probably correct – and then they mispronounce every other player’s name.

And “Sweet Home Chicago,” don’t forget, which is apparently mandatory, the soundtrack to pandering. If Robert Johnson were alive, he would drop dead again. If not immediately, as soon as Jim Belushi showed up. Belushi, it should be noted, is the only person left on the planet who still likes “Sweet Home Chicago.” In fact, the song is a scientifically-proven Belushi-attractant: like a shark sensing blood, Jim Belushi can hear “Sweet Home Chicago” from long distances at the lowest volumes.

I’m not sure what to do about any of this, only that something must be done.

A victorious season charges through months of tension and excitement, with expectations rising along the way. There is the initial understanding that the team is one of the contenders, the inevitable difficulties and questions, then the buildup to the playoffs. Each round draws the ultimate prize closer, and then it is all fulfilled, often suddenly and explosively as it was last week.

And after all the exultation, the final image is phony and manufactured, looking and sounding like an eighth-grade graduation ceremony. Except with more hangovers and f-bombs.

We ask our professional teams to win titles, setting the highest possible standards. We need to apply the same thinking to what happens after they actually do.

I agree with Bernstein. Bunch of idiots sweating up a storm to listen to a bunch of inebriated or hung-over hockey players. 5 minutes of the "highlights" on the 10pm news and I'm good.

Danny, don't go...problem solved. I don't go because i don't like crowds. Difference being I don't shit on others who like going and, you know, actually have fun consuming sports.

He really is a miserable piece of shit and has taken trolling to a whole new level - that's all he does now.

This was one of the first articles of his I couldn't even finish. It's nothing more than a reminder that he detests fans and feels their involvement in sports should have a total church/state relationship. It's supposed to piss people off. Mission accomplished.

Dan thinks that ANYONE who pays to go to a sporting event is a goddamned idiot who needs to be gentrified by his chosen ways cuz THE. GAMES. ARE. MADE. FOR. TV.

This column is just.... seriously, he's chicago's very own skip bbay less. Don't let their formal position of skip being their antithesis fool you.... that's who he's emulating to a T. But Dan's important so he'll never try to sell you an I <3 @DAN_Bernstein shirt; that's the only diff

Yeah, this is some pretty standard-issue fan detest from DB. That Jim Belushi passage could be reworked into a funny tweet. Other than that, no new ground broken here.

1. He is paid to write these columns and get people riled up, so you fell right in line.

2. You claim you agree with him on many of his points?

Translation: I don't care about the Hawks, so everyone celebrating their championship is stupid, noisy, drunk, and, above all else, white. The only innovation here is Bernstein's unique bludgeoning of the English language.

"We ask our professional teams to win titles, setting the highest possible standards." Who, precisely, is setting these standards, English major?

"If Robert Johnson were alive, he would drop dead again." Did Robert Johnson drop dead? I thought his death remained shrouded in mystery. Way to name-drop your way to some cheap white-guy street cred though.

There are lots of miserable & spiteful people in the world. Berns hates everything & everyone, including himself. Ill never understand how anyone can spend so much time bitching & ragging, especially someone in the entertainment business.

I hate when Bernsie gets on rants like this. It is stupid.

But at least it is a sports related discussion. I would rather him rant about this than to jump into other areas.

If he does this to get reactions, it's a cheap parlor trick, one that a man of bernstein's intelligence and talent should be well above. This might be a way to get a schmuck like North or a half dead idiot like Mancow to move the dials and get the clicks but bernstein should be able to get these views and the meters moved with talent and well thought out sports reasoning.

The fact that he has to resort to this shows that he is not convinced of his own ability and has to stoop down to the least common denominator to get the attention he needs.

This is all assuming, of course, that this is a calculated manuever and that he isn't just a simple, jaded, joyless, elitist asshole. Though I suppose they are not mutually exclusive.

Sadly, I think it's both of those things. I reckon the only time Dan attends a professional sports game he's gifted tickets via some connection made through the Score or his charity/foundation and he rationalizes it to himself that he's doing it for his kid, you know, cuz it's the mensch thing to do (to use a term dropped in the most recent curious hair POTY candidate).

But really, see, Dan sees sports through the cold dead eyes of a man who probably deeply resents the fact he's gotta deal with such BULLSHIT to build up his kids' college funds. As it's been posited on here before, while his contemporaries do REAL. IMPORTANT. WORK. like doctoring or lawyering or politicking (you know, the kind of things you are to unequivocally 100% defer to the expert opinions/prognosis-es that these BIG. BOY. PROFESSIONALS do for a living) he's doing "that sports thing", so i'm sure when he's at prestigious wine and cheese parties with the misses he's more than acutely aware of people making their little jabs "oh, so do you still do that sports talk show thing?" and maybe there's a little shit eating grin, a little smirk, a little something that says HEY EMPEROR BERNSTEIN YOU HAVE NO CLOTHES; YOUR EMPIRE IS A TAWDRY WORLD OF INCONSEQUENTIAL BULLSHIT.

so that's where he finds the fuel to campaign for social justice re: sandusky, alford, and even longtime bernsteinian nemeses like Paula Deen or the Booyahs.... that's where he feels an obligation to gentrify the views of his listeners to his enlightened levels, where he sees the utter absurdity of what he does to bring home that nice solid paycheck and when he knows he's being scoffed at by the BIG. BOY. PROFESSIONALS. on the wine and cheese circuit, he tells himself that he's doing something transcendentally important.... he's doing something intellectual. he's trying to bring the world of BIG. BOY. INTELLECTUALISM. to a head with the world of the hapless meatball [almost said the g-word] and lift up his audience to be BETTER than what they are.... because Dan needs to know that he's doing something important other than just talking bullshit and taking home a loftier paycheck than ~75% of his audience or whatever.... he needs to know that he's contributing to society as a whole and making it a better place.... he needs to know that since he's already chosen this career path and he's invested his kids' future in his success in said field that he does something that TRULY. MATTERS.

so yeah, he's a jaded elitist asshole who knows he's better than his listenership and therefore sighs and realizes that he has to be their shepherd otherwise they'll just continue to revel in their own filth drunken on the trains of life, but at the same time it's also a calculated manuever in that he knows that the more people he pisses off by saying stupid condescending shit like this, the more people that read his stuff.

it's kind of like that one time (or maybe one of the ~5 times, i lost count) that i told david kaplan what kind of a spectacular asshole he is on twitter and his response was "thanks for watching/listening/reading" --- indeed, when you've reached the level where you're all in and your kids' futures hang in the balance, remembering that there's no such thing as bad publicity (save stupid amanda bynes / aaron hernandez shit) i reckon if anyone ever went up to dan @ a remote and called him out in a personal aside convo, the response you get would be some intellectualized/euphemism-laden version of david kaplan's "thanks for reading"

Agree with a lot of the points in here. There are times when he toes the line of pessimism and joylessness where it can be humorous or easily detected as tongue-in-cheek. This is one of those times where he's approaching outright nihilism.

Some days he outright hates all of sports, and it's pretty clear that he feels he's "outgrown" the medium. It's all spite.

He often comes off as a fraud to me. It's as if he is trying to convince himself that the things he's saying is true. Especially dealing with race. I was a big fan of Mariotti's columns and Dan is no Jay Mariotti.

Say what you want about Jay Mariotti but his columns were very well written. He was a wordsmith and always painted a passionate point of view even if he didn't mean it.

You know, I've heard this before and I don't really agree. I consider him a hack who beat semi-funny or unfunny insults like "Big Skirt" into the ground in Rosenbloomesque fashion.

Danny, don't go...problem solved. I don't go because i don't like crowds. Difference being I don't shit on others who like going and, you know, actually have fun consuming sports.

This is really the perfect response to the column, and to the endless line of politicians trying to ban shit. Don't like a rally? Don't go. Don't like gay marriage? Don't marry another dude. Don't like drugs? Don't get high.

These are incredibly simple solutions to what are personal problems. Fuck anyone who's solution to something they personally don't enjoy is to attempt to ban/outlaw/eliminate it.

Obviously you know this can't apply to everything.

It applies to everything that doesn't involve infringing on someone else's rights.

The effects of some of these decisions will have a negative impact on others. Then someone has to arbitrarily decide what age someone should gain this right.

I hate that kind of thinking. "Well... something bad MIGHT happen if we let someone buy drugs or guns or marry another dude, so lets just ban all that shit to prevent what MIGHT happen."

Lets focus on what actually is happening. Might be a refreshing change of pace.
