Caller wants to know why other Biogenesis names in other sports like the NBA aren't out there. Bernstine goes into full denial mode about PED use not being in the culture of basketball, ignoring Biogenesis's location in the US in Miami, and the NBA team playing there. LeBron James just went 6'8" 260 lbs. naturally in Bernstine's world. OK. |

During the Second Half, Bernstein claimed to be eagerly anticipating the release of David Epstein's The Sports Gene, and specifically noted his interest in Epstein's idea that athletes of certain races and ethnicities might be genetically predisposed for success in certain sports. You can't make this shit up! |

It's bad science and really very dangerous. Thus, I'm not surprised dan bernstein would give such nonsense his imprimatur. David Epstein wrote: In high school, I wondered whether the Jamaican Americans who made our track team so successful might carry some special speed gene from their tiny island. In college, I ran against Kenyans, and wondered whether endurance genes might have traveled with them from East Africa. Is Epstein unaware that Hitler's "scientists" used calipers to declare the physical inferiority of Jews? This stuff is offensive and it's even more unconscionable coming from educated Jews who should know better. |

And wouldn't Jamaicans, generally being descendants of slaves, be West Africans? Or does one side run the sprints and the other does the marathons? How lucky can one continent be... This is all really icky stuff, and the worst part is that Dan probably thinks he's giving black people a compliment by telling them what fine athletes they are. Do black academicians gush breathlessly over what superior athletes black people are? Probably not. |

At the risk of being labeled the next Mengele, I don't really find the topic offensive. If the Amazon reviews are to be believed for this book, though, a lot of the stuff seems overly simplistic. There's also a "so what?" quality to it. If I'm buying a thoroughbred yearling, you better believe I'm looking at bloodlines. If I'm an NFL GM, not so much. I guess the shorter way I'd put at it is that genetics probably play a huge role, but the science is way too complex (and premature) to break into Gladwellian -- or if I want to be mean, Lehrerian -- nuggets. And, thankfully, we're not as a society going to be controlling athlete genetics the way we do with livestock, so I don't get the practical use of it. Some people are genetically more athletic than others. Thesis! |

I'm starting to think that when Dan does his Chicago-accented meatball schtick he's really trying to say "You don't besmirch black people just for being black you idiots, you appropriate their culture then you besmirch them!" |

Some people are genetically more athletic than others. Thesis! The difference being that thoroughbreds are purposely bred for particular traits, unlike human beings. Not to mention that a generation for horses is about one-tenth that of one for people. No, this is a highly anti-intellectual stance from a guy who fancies himself a hyper-intellectual. It's like something a dope who dropped out of fourth grade would think. "Well, of course dose blacks are better at sports. Just watch an NBA or NFL game!" And from there it's just a tiny little jump to saying Jews are smarter than gentiles. And I guarantee you dan believes that as well. This is real racism. Not getting drunk and saying n-igger. |

Quote: The difference being that thoroughbreds are purposely bred for particular traits, unlike human beings. That's kind of my point. There are genetic differences in humans, but without focused breeding (which should never, ever be done), the genetics doesn't have any real predictive ability, so I don't get why it should matter as a practical matter. I don't really get much value added by knowing someone race if I'm a GM. It's folly if Bernstein or anyone thinks otherwise. |

Remember when Dan was the guy who relentlessly skewered the stereotype of the white grinder and the black Natural Athlete, and went hard after anyone who dared to call up his show and try perpetuating it? Now Dan himself is obsessing over chiseled black bodies, fat Venezuelans with insufficient African bloodlines, and the need for all of them to entrust their financial affairs to Really Smart People. It's so weird. |

I did read an excerpt from Epstein's book, I believe it was in The New Yorker. Anyway, part of his theory is based on the concept that humans have lived in Africa far longer than anywhere else. In fact, to such a degree that the gene pool in Africa is far deeper and more comprehensive than in other places where small groups simply landed after leaving Africa and have lived for relatively short periods of time. Thus, his conclusion that the ten fastest men in the world are likely African, and also, that the ten slowest men in the world are probably African as well. We simply aren't seeking out the slowest guys. I'm sure that's not exactly the kind of ringing endorsement of eugenics that dan was hoping for. |

He loves to hate on rural gomers and the Hardcore South but I'd imagine that most of his economic and racial ideas are about in line with your average Vermilion County teabagger. Meanwhile he's giving us live reads of Deadspin columns without any apparent awareness that he's precisely the type of David Brooksian figure that people like Tommy Craggs hate the most. |

Well my previous GF was 5'10-ish and ran track in HS, so I did think of the possibilities of creating an athlete with her since we both possess a tall gene. But with my luck, I'd have some 6'4 kid that's into art and fashion. |

Dan: Have you ever seen or heard of these giant cranes moving around crushed cars? It's amazing. Terry: No, uh uh. Dan: Yah, I bet those guys make a lot of money. Terry: Oh sure, I know that for a fact, those guys doing pretty well for themselves. I mean, um, big money.
