european soccer has a maddening pre/early season. there aren't as many trades as there are transfers of players/contracts for dazzling amounts of $$$ between clubs, even tho the good ones seem to make ~6-10mil/year for the most part... oh and these transfers can only be made from june-september1 and ummm, i think the month of january. the general mentality is more prone to create endless "transfer gossip" combined with everyone overreacting about every facet of the team. agents/teams/players/etc all play games with the media and put on a show leading up to that final transfer deadline ~2 weeks into the season, highlighted by serious sky sports' ubiquitous coverage of deadline day.

it'd be like if a bunch of goofy looking kids in rays swag started hanging outside of tropicana field on the trade deadline day because they want to get the first glimpse of delmon young arriving on his white horse to save their ass in the playoffs. that's the kind of coverage afforded to football deadline day on that side of the pond, where it seems like soccer is essentially NFL+MLB+NBA all in one for them.
